Would the length of the exhaust pipe make any difference on the noise factor?:D:D

It may have been mentioned here but I have a friend who is a professional shooter. He has some type of ear plugs that are active protection. It only cancels certain noise levels. They are custom fit and expensive, but he swears by them. When there is no loud noise, he can hear normally with them in.

I've been told by a doctor that continuous loud noise exposure, like a tractor, is even worse for your ears than intermittent noise that is even louder, like a shotgun.

Edit: Never mind. Looks like these things cost about $1000!

I do some shooting and have a pair of muff's like you are talking about here. They work great...can hear normal conversations at the range....but block out the loud noises (above maybe 90 db ??). I damaged my ears some time back....now I have tinitus and these muffs are the real deal in some situations. You can buy em for under $200 (I'm pretty sure I paid around $100 for mine).

I do all the time. Sometimes it is fairly entertaining in the way it varies but other times it is boring and never a good thing. I never had any hearing protection in the service. We blazed away willy nilly and never saw a muff on the range.

My .44 mag (fired on base range) is probably the worst offender but a jillion rounds of Gov .30 cal couldn't have helped.

Later after the damage was mostly done I got a pair of Lee Sonics. These were in the ear devices similar to plastic ear plugs. They were made of aluminum and had soft plastic covers with molded in ridges to ensure a leak free fit. There was a hole through the middle of the device and you could hear normal conversations and range instructions with no problems but the report of a gun was severely reduced in amplitude. If someone were talking to you when a gun went off you only missed a small portion of one syllable of the speech and likely were not hindered in your understanding.

The way they worked:

There as a lightweight spring and a diaphragm inside. A pressure wave (concussion from muzzle blast) would slam the little diaphragm closed like a check valve. As soon as the pressure dropped the spring opened the valve and normal hearing was restored. By protecting you from the muzzle blast your ear's sensitivity was not destroyed.

It takes a while after shooting at a duck or a deer or whatever before your hearing returns to normal. You may sort of hear loud sounds OK but subtle sounds in the woods will be lost for a while. A bear could walk right up on you and you would not hear the foot falls. Ditto a rattle snakes rattling.

The Lee Sonics worked really well for shooting and other activities with powerful sonic pressure waves like blasting or fireworks. They were not good for more or less steady state noise like jet engines or plain continuous noise.

They were way under $100. Not sure if they are available now. If you found an old pair you might be able to hollow out a foam ear plug and put the Lee Sonic aluminum part inside.

The things I'm talking about are not muffs. They are custom fitted ear plugs. They make a mold of your ear for each one. They do work the same as the muffs you have though.

I'm new here, But.....when I was 790 shopping I noticed some had the muffler you described, while the one I bought, has a vertical pipe. It was very much quieter than the unit you may have. I don't know if this one has been modified or if a better(quieter) muffler/exhaust was an option. This tractor is VERY easy on my 53 year old guitar punished ears.........then again, I may be already half deaf...
