We alway ran 50/50 antifreeze/ water solution in our hot water baseboard system. There was a makeup tank - very much like the expansion tank on your cooling system in your auto. Check the water level in the makeup tank once a year and add water as needed. NEVER allowed to have a direct connect between the house heating system and any potable water supply.

Mine is setup exactly like your setup. I was told that adding antifreeze could cause issues with corrosion. Did you have any issues with yours? How long were you in the house?

Drewmon, I did basically what you are asking about doing in your garage. Only it was to add just a little heat to temper the cool air in our basement which has not heaters.

We looped our baseboard hot water system on the main floor to two 8' baseboard heaters in the basement (one at the front and one at the rear of the basement. Every time the main floor called for heat, it would add a little heat to our basement.

Our basement never gets below 50 degrees, even without any heat, but we do have a type of anti-freeze specifically for boiler systems which also has corrosion inhibitors in it and adds lubricity for the circulator pumps. Plus protects the system should we loose power for any great length of time during the frigid Winter months.
