Adding filter to my portable diesel fuel tank

/ Adding filter to my portable diesel fuel tank #11
Last month i ran about 45gal of home heating oil that was nearly black through my goldenrod filter and into my diesel storage tank. After 45gal the filter was prety much plugged up but the fluid that was coming out was bright red/clear. These filters work really well so two filters may not be needed. Remember your machine also has filters.

That痴 true but the fuel filter on my Ford 1720 is very small about 1 by 3?
The cleaner you can make the fuel going in the tank tha better off you are.

I've never heard anyone say their fuel was "excessively filtered". Error on the side of caution. :)

Your ford 1720 uses hi pressure injectors. It will prob run on alot worse fuel than you think.

Im not saying dont filter it im saying having an elaborate filtering setup isnt very needed. If you start of with clean fresh fuel the filter isnt doing much unless its catching water. Water is what really degrades fuel. Water is what grows the slude and algee.

I bought the cheapest DC pump TSC sells and added that exact filter at the outlet of the pump with it in an upright position as shown in your picture. It never happens as I am careful with the quality of my diesel, but If I were to have sucked up water from the tank it could be seen at the bottom of the filter and drained out with the pet cock.

On the water absorbing filter, read the directions in the box which state that is an absorbent filtration system, not a molecular blocking system, and the filter has to be changed periodically when it gets full of water......nothing tells you this...you just have to change it on a regular basis or when you think it might be full. Running three hundred gallons or so per year of clean diesel, in sealed tanks, and never seeing water in the filter, nor in the bottom of my storage tanks at fill up time, I don't get very excited that it's time to change the filter. I use セ" hoses so I just neck down the 1" fittings on the pump and filter.

On the water absorbing filters youll know how full of water they are by the fuel flow.
As they absorb water they lose flow and if enough gets in them the flow will practically stop. At least this has been my experience with a hand pump.

I know the goldenrod spin on water block filters will lock up a hand pump when they are full of water. I never had water contaminated fuel since I began using an electric pump, but I'm sure I would hear the pump strain and see reduced fuel.
Also, the spin on water block filters are 10 micron particle filters. Not sure about the replaceable cartridge ones.

As you said IF you start off with clean fuel elaborate filters are unnecessary.
However there is no guarantee the fuel you purchase is at an acceptable level of purity.
Particle contamination is the primary reason for fuel filtration.
Today’s high pressure common rail fuel systems operate at pressures of 30,000 psi plus and require 2 micron filters or better to survive.
Low pressure injection systems such as my Ford 1720 tractor 2000 psi +- are quite tolerant of fuel quality as you mentioned.
When setting up a new fuel tank and filter why would you not go the extra and add quality filtration.
Excessive filtration eliminates fuel related issues.
With on site storage of diesel water is a real concern especially if it is exposed to weather and/or daily temperature changes that makes the tank breathe. This process slowly introduces moisture into the tank which can over time contaminate the fuel.
If your fuel usage is low water can build up over time.
Particle and water filters are both essential, there is no such thing as overkill it’s insurance!

Condensation in a non full fuel tank is def a real thing. I have seen it in basement oil tanks, and you dont get huge temp swings in a basement. Mabe keeping your equipment tank full of clean fuel is best.

The nice thing about using 55 gallon drums is that you can keep them sealed. I check in the bottom of mine every time I fill up and never have I seen any water puddled at the bottom, nor algae nor anything but pure, clear, red tinted farm diesel. I use Power Services Diesel "snake oil", have been for 30+ years, and yet to have a fuel problem of any kind running 5 tractors. SF is my preferred fuel additive for gas engines.

Absolutely agree.
I have two filters on my bulk tanks and, in 30 years, have never had a fuel or injector problem. If it matters, I also add Stanadyne Performance Formula fuel treatment.
Tractor numbers always between 5 and 8.
