I just got off the phone with my dealer and he gave me a price of $1050 to add a mid-pto w/3rd SCV for a mid-mount mower. The parts were ~650 bucks with the rest being labor. He says it will take ~7 hours to install. Is this something I could do to save the money? I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but 7 hours seems to be alot of time for an experienced mechanic.

It sounds a little high, maybe a couple hours...
does that include trucking in and out?

Your situation is why it is easier to sell those
options when ordered in from the factory,
than to have them dealer installed after the fact.

A little high, but not really gouging either, especially if there ends being some little part that is needed, or something mysteriously snaps while doing it...

But doing it shouldn't be all THAT hard, but you have to get to the DSCV under the seat. The mid pto knob is already floating around inside your console.... You need to drill a hole for it.

Hooking up the pto looks very straighforward...

I'sd like to do the same job on mine. Drop by and we can do them both together...

I was going to drop-off the tractor! I purchased the 4310 used and it didn't have the mid-PTO option. Getting prices to possibly add the mid-PTO and got sticker shock!

Doug

BTW - Does anyone know someone in the western NY area that would be willing to make extra cash??

Hi dfeck,

If the 4x10 series is similar to the 3x20 series for the construction, its 3 parts, front, mid, & rear... the frame (tractor) is the tractor pieces themselves.

If so-adding the mid PTO means a new mid-section... i.e. breaking the tractor into it's 3 pieces... not an impossible job, but a big one. The hour estimate sounds pretty reasonable... pretty much an all day job so long as there are no hitches.

Good luck!

On my 4310 there is a plate that covers where the midPTO is. Removing that plate there is a coupler that the pto would connect. But again, I haven't done it yet, and don't have the service manual, guess I had better get it!

Mike, It is alittle more involved than removing the plate and bolting on the mid pto unit. You also need to knock out the soft plugs in front and rear of trans case to install the driveshaft, gear , and bearings in the case. they are secure with snap rings and i believe a roll pin. There is another neutral switch that needs to be wired in also. Actually on the 10 series, the entire rear cover on trans needs to be removed to install idler gear and stub shaft. The dealer's times seem very reasonable to me. I have attached a picture of all the parts included in kit. It isn't a kit most people want to tackle unless they are very mechanically inclined.
