Looks like my brother and myself are gonna widen the bridge to our houses, and I'm assuming this year.
The highway department has a crew out replacing a bridge about 1/4 away and my brother asked what they were doing with the old I-beams and he explained what he had in mind. They asked if he had a way to transport them and said he's got a dual axle flat bed car hauler. They told him to drop it off and they'd load it up.
3 days later and there's a pile of steel beams on that ol' trailer and just before the small stream flooded he brought it all home.

Story's like that just warm the cockles of my heart! Especially considering the price of steel these days! Good to 'recycle' stuff like that.

I'm happy you're going to "recycle" that at your house and not some place in China! John

I bought some 12" used I-beam from a over head crane manufacturer to make mine. Made an execelent bridging over a small creek. I put steel grating material down for the decking. If you got yours free then you done good......... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use to have a farm right across the river from you neer Deering. Man, those bridges use to wash out all the time. On the other side (where we were for a year) I wished they used steel instead of wood. Probably would have helped a lot.

A minor update. The Highway Department built the bridge we are to be repairing/relpacing or whatever it is my brother wants to do (he's the brains, I'm the beauty).

The old bridge was supposed to be maintained by the highway department, but 40 some odd years have passed and nobody knows exactly what's supposed to happen.

The highway is coming to the house Monday (4/5) to inspect the bridge and give us the necessary permits to do the work or to see if it's theirs to replace. Heck, we didn't know you needed a permit.

By brother has cut the I beams from the bridge I mentioned earlier to fit our needs. I'm sure this is gonna be a project that wears us out but it's much needed and will be a learning experience... No promises but I may take a few pics whenever it is we start.
