You can get away with having different width boards between the top and bottom. I notice that the desired photo has the top sticking out about an inch over the bottom, which would inhibit water running down and wicking into the ends or inside of the bottom half. As long as you do the same thing with the dissimilar boards, you shouldn't have any problem.

The photo of the actual end looks to me like the top and bottom are flush with each other, with a horizontal strip separating them. That looks to me like a prime candidate for bringing water inside as it runs down the top and hits that strip.

Yes you are correct regarding the strip. What he's doing now is drying more boards inside the building. Once those are dry like the outside ones he plans to nail over the top portion to simulate the desired look I'm after (line up top and bottom boards). This also leaves a 1" overhang on top which keeps water from the end of the boards as you mentioned. My only concern is the future expansion and shrinking and how those two layers will respond to each other down the road. Guess we will see.
