"AGM Car" batteries for less used tractors?

personally I use an interstate deep cycle battery with the most cca that will fit the space. never had an issue, I don't charge it except when running the engine. I live in SC so I use my tractor all year so there is really no down time. When this one quits, I will buy another one. Just my opinion and preference.

Why a deep cycle battery for a starting application? Do you have some heavy load which is expected to draw the battery down more than the alternator can keep up with (e.g. and lectric winch or similar)?

Generally, deep cycle holds up better than a starting battery to been drawn down significantly, however, it does not hold up as well to high peak loads (which is what starting batteries are designed for.)

Have ODYSSEY brand battery in my Jeep, it runs very little, but always there... Big CCA as it is used for winching at times... AGM batteries (not necessarily brand specific) are probably more robust than standard plate batteries, well worth the extra cost.... Had one actually last about 20 years in "show" car rarely driven....

I use two Mazda Miata size AGM batteries in my XK120 Jaguar. It has two smallish battery boxes, that were originally intended for two 6V batteries in series. I store it for the winter with the batteries in the car and find that they are keeping their charge well through the winter slumber.

The electronics will not see a difference between FLA and AGM batteries.

No it won't. You will just have LA battery issues.

No problem. Some AGM batteries run a few tenths of a volt higher than Flooded Lead-Acid, but the difference between the two will make absolutely no difference to your electronics.

We found that there was more plate breakage in the automotive batteries due to the harder plates they used to get longevity. This is in heavy construction equipment. Especially things like vibratory compactors. Sometimes the only battery that will fit is the industrial size. Heavy construction is much different than the small farm and home use tractors most people have on this platform. I did have a Hyster compactor sitting around here after I retired and used it to compact my roads and building pads that was made for two of those long skinny batteries. I stuck in a Walmart single 12v to move the machine and compact one small area and it was in there until I sold it 5 years later. Not the same as vibrating on a jobsite daily.

If someone has fuel dripping around their battery, they likely have bigger issues to worry about than whether to pad their battery.
