The large GE jet Engines are running about $10 mil a copy for new??It is Engine, not motor..
Jonyyuma,:)

Yes, that price sounds about right. But you can buy an almost wore out Pratt and Whitney JT8-7b or -9 for pennys.;)

I will remember to tell my co workers when we are working on them to call them engines, not motors.

A jet engine is nothing more than a giant air compressor.

Which is the second part of the 4 step process of how a jet engine operates.;)

It's interesting than a turbine engine uses the same 4 cycles that a piston engine uses. Except that all 4 cycles happen at the same time on the turbine.

A good 5hp single phase motor is $500 or more! Unless I can find a good used motor, I'm not needing that much air.
That depends how good. You can get better prices on the 3450 RPM ones. I have one like this.

Leeson Air Compressor Electric Motor 5 HP, Model# 116511 | Motors | Northern Tool + Equipment

Served fine for 10yrs and still will if I reconnect that compressor. I would run it an hr or more continuous sand blasting with my Kellogg American compressor. Current at 160PSI cuttoff pressure was 25A ... an overload.

You are correct.

Well, those things that spit fire out of the bottom of a space ship are called rocket motors by the people in that industry.
... Corrupting the language. Definitive words are losing their meaning.

Those leeson motors are very good, my dad has one on his old delta table saw, the motor has been used quite a bit for like 20 years, and it is still working perfect.

Thanks, I need the 1740 rpm model. It's just that it's low on the totem pole financially speaking.

The motor vs engine topic is interesting. I did a quick google search on the subject and found engine has been around for along time, and was used to describe many different things. Motor also has an interesting origin

So I have one question, why do they call Detroit the MOTOR city? Do they make electric motors?

Let's look at word origins: motor
mid-15c., from L. motor, lit. "mover," from movere "to move" (see move). From 15c. as "controller, prime mover" (in reference to God); sense of "agent or force that produces mechanical motion" is first recorded 1660s; that of "machine that supplies motive power" is from 1856. With explosive use 20c. as a comb. form of motor-car (1895). Motor-boat is from 1902. First record of slang motor-mouth "fast-talking person" is from 1971.Online Etymology Dictionary

engine
c.1300, "mechanical device," also "skill, craft," from O.Fr. engin "skill, cleverness," also "trick, deceit, stratagem; war machine" (12c.), from L. ingenium "inborn qualities, talent" (see ingenious). At first meaning a trick or device, or any machine (especially military); sense of "device that converts energy to mechanical power" is 18c., especially of steam engines.

Think about marine for a second, there are outboard MOTORS, not engines, and there are inboard MOTORS, not engines. Even though they are internal combustion engines, they are called motors.

I just put MOTOR oil in my ENGINE :confused2:

I have no problem with someone referring to a vehicles power plant as a motor. It doesn't really work the other way though, "Electric Engine" doesn't sound right.

Like was mentioned about the NASA rocket propulsion units, they interchange the words engine/motor, so if it's good enough for those egg heads it's OK with me.

I use engine oil in my engines, altho it is mislabled such that the distinction is lost.:( It takes an engine to drive a motor. It takes a self sustaining prime mover at the head of the line to cause motoring -- hence motor car, cycle, boat, etc -as subsidiary systems undergoing motoring. In many cases a motor will be used to start the engine.
