What has become popular here in southern MN is to plant oats, combine it, bale the straw (lot of straw still used here) and then plant alfalfa into the stubble in fall. The light oats that blows over the combine comes up with the alfalfa.

So, I would expect that you can seed oats in fall with the alfalfa. Here of course the oats will winterkill pretty quickly.

Folks feel the alfalfa gets a better start in the fall with no wheel traffic on it, and they can about break even on the oats/straw. So, it makes for a stronger alfalfa field.

A lot of peas are raised here (Del Monte, Little Giant, Sennica plants are all around...) and lot of alfalfa goes into those fields after the peas are out too.

I have always done spring planting. Just how I am. :) The fall stuff looks pretty good tho. Need to catch a rain is the big thing at that time.
