I know what you mean about SPF, just any whitewood that is at the mill at any given time. I look for older wood when I can, recycled.

Did I miss it somewhere or how did you do the frames for the cabinet?

Mortise and tenon. I have a mortiser which makes these joints a bit easier.
No pegs in these, though. It wouldn't look right in this situation, and there isn't any structural need for it in a built in anyway. Biscuits, dowels or even pocket screws would work just as well.

This is a built-in project, and thus it's really not especially demanding, especially working with pine, and doing machine cut dovetails etc.

When you're working with wood that costs $20 a board foot, then you have to be a craftsman. As it is, I'm using cheap wood so I make extras of every piece for test cuts and so on. When I've finished milling, I can pick the best to assemble with and not be bothered too much by the waste.

Mornin Cliff,
Do you like the way I have hijacked your thread ? I forgot to mention for those interested. The legs are 2 1/4" x 2 1/4 " square 28 1/2" long. With a 1" top the table height is 29 1/2". The mortises are 1/2" x 3" long by 1 1/4" deep. The side aprons will be 1" x 4". Without any leaves in the top the dimensions will be 42" x 70". Im planning on having two leaves 16" which when installed the table would be 42" x 102". All these calculations just so Kathleen can use a 60" x 120" table cloth !

Good Evening Guys,
I went to the sawmill and got a bunch of 5/4 rough sawn oak today. I rough cut the planks to give me enough stock for the top, and allowing for milling waste to finish to size. What I did forget, was to get enough stock for two leaves I will have to take another run over there.

I just had to snap a shot of all these rough boards lined up on the tablesaw, its a lot of milling, Im feeling a bit overwhelmed right now.

Im kinda thinkin Im going to let these boards acclimate to my shop a bit before I start milling them. I still have to mill the table aprons, and create the tenons and fit them to the leg mortises. This table is gonna weigh a few pounds, Kathleen wont be moving it by herself
