Mornin Cliff,
Do you like the way I have hijacked your thread ?

Yes, actually. It keeps the heat off me to post progress since I haven't made any. Keep posting.

That's a lot of oak. I like your morticer. I have one just like it. Very nice tool.

Mornin Cliff,
Kathleen has downsized the table. She now wants a 42" x 60" without the leaves installed. Im thinking if I made two 10" leaves, my overall would be 80", still big enough to seat 10 people. Her way of thinking, is she could have both our boys over along with their wives and two kids each. Of course, neither boy is even married yet ;) :) I thanked her for informing me of the changes before I started gluing parts :)

In any event, I will be working at milling the aprons and tenons next.

Good Evening Guys,
I got a little shop time this evening. I milled the side and end aprons for the table. I set up the dado cutter and started milling tenons. Actually got the first one fitted.

The 1st pic is setting the dado height to start cutting the tenons, Im a toolmaker by trade and like using indicators and calipers when I can ;)

2nd pic is setting the stop so all the tenons are the same length and square, thats important to get a gap free fit between the apron and leg.

3rd pic is the finished tenon, I leave a small bit of stock on the tenon and hand fit with a mill file.

4th pic is the first tenon fitted.

This is the way I do it, there are other ways but I like this method and it works well for me !

BTW, the throat plate in the table saw top is one I made, you can see where I can interchange the lexan plates for different widths of the dado cutter.

Scotty,

Very nice and precise.

Are you planning any decorative bead on the apron?

Mornin Cliff and Egon,
Thanks ! Cliff, not actually a decorative bead, but Im planning on relieving the bottom side of the aprons about 1" with a radius about 1" just before you get to the tenon. Thats probablly clear as mud :) If you remember before I stated that the leg length was 28 1/2". With a standard height chair I want enough clearance under the apron for any fat thighs the table may encounter ;) Im 5' 10" and at 180 I have enough clearance for my legs but you never know when a heavier person may be at the table :) As I said earlier in the thread that the table top will be 1" thick and that will give me a 29 1/2" table surface. Im planning on a 1/4" radius along the top table edge.

I wont be adding anything new until next week because Im off to Vt tonite to hunt some mice ! ;) :)

Good Evenin Guys,
I spent a little time in the shop tonite and got the aprons and legs dry fitted.

I will be making a template to relieve the bottom the aprons next.

Im also planning on using some rosewood that I have stashed to make 1/4" square pegs, and I will be pinning each tenon twice and leaving the square pegs just proud of the leg surface. This was done quite frequently in mission style furniture.

For those interested, there is a 1/4" reveal between the apron and the outside leg surface.

How do you plan to attach the top to the base?

Mornin Cliff,
As you remember Im building an extension table for the kitchen. I will be milling up two square runners that will run from end to end. These runners will have t-slots milled through their length and matching t-slots in the end aprons. That way I can open the top up to accept the extension leaf or leaves. The table top will have two tee profiles screwed to the underside that will slide in those runners. The leaf or leaves will be positioned with locating dowels for alignment of the top.

All I have to do is make it work and look good ! ;)

Good Evening Guys,
I started milling up the stock for the t-slot runners that will go inbetween the end aprons tonite. I thought I would post a pic of the amazing ray pattern on this white oak. I certainly didnt plan it that way, since these pieces will be underneath the table and out of sight :(

When your dealing with rough sawn lumber you really cant tell what it will look like when finished milled. Anyway I hope the pic is clear enough for you to see the grain, it is very nice.
