I got the drawers fitted today.

The first picture shows the two chests. Eventually they will be on either side of a large window in the library (or extra bedroom depending on the need).

The second photo is from the top looking into the top drawer, which already has a finished interior.

The third photo is from the back. You'll note that there is no cross rail on the drawer rails in the back. The ends of the drawer rails will eventually be supported by blocks in the back which will also act as drawer stops. These will be added after the drawers and the cases are have a finish applied and are their final shape and fit. This assures a good alignment in the front and a solid stop when everything's all done.

I meant to mention, I do most of the fitting required with handplanes. I find it's much faster and more pleasant than beltsanding to fit.

The first photo shows the planes I use. A lie-nielson low angle jack, a rabbit plane (for gettting into corners in the carcase) and a standard block plane.

The second photo is a close up of my favorite plane. It's the Lie-Nielson low angle jack. I love this thing. For drawers it is especially good because I can plane endgrain with it and get a nice smooth finish. This allows me to plane right over the endgrain of the pins on the dovetail joint and over the side wood to get a smooth side.

The Lie-Nielson web site is here: Lie-Nielsen Toolworks USA | Home I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just really like that plane.

Good Afternoon Guys,
Cliff very nice job on those cabinets ! That plane is a beauty by the way. I have the whole Stanley set from the #7 joiner down to the #1. Thanks for sharing that !

It was a long day in the wood shop today, but when I finish mill all the boards for the top I like to get everything joined and glued that same day. Rather than take a chance of having a board take a slight set. I guess Im old fashion, but it works for me.

The first pic is all the boards joined and thicknesed.

The second pic is using my little shooting board fixture to get one straight edge before ripping to width and joining the edges.

The third pic is trying to figure out board orientation to make the top look right.

The fourth pic are the two top halves glued and clamped, Amen ;) :)

BTW, I decided on Titebond 2 which resists moisture for my glue of choice!

Hi,

That's a lot of boards to make. That gets back to the first post I made in this thread about it taking all day just to make boards. They're going to make an attractive table.

I agree that Titebond 2 is a good idea for table where water is likely to seep in.

I noticed you have the anti-fatigue mats in front of your table saw. Do you find you like them? Do they really work?

Good Evening Cliff,
Yes actually they do help, you just need to tell my back that right now ;) Actually I have some more cushy rubber stuff up in the attic waiting for the new barn thats in the planning stages right now :)

Im gonna try and attach the hutch I built for the VP a few years back that needs to match the table or I guess the other way around :) I guess you can tell I like to do a little inlay work, the inlay in the hutch drawer front is supposed to be symbolic of the sun rising :)

Hey Cliff,
Please forgive me here, this is really stretching this kitchen table thing just a bit :) But this is just a fun sunday night with our kids and their girlfriends around the kitchen table, you will notice the Farmall Red table cloth. For lack of a better place to post them, and I am building a new kitchen table, this is what the table will be used for many years to come ! ;)

Good Evening Guys,
Today I pre sanded the legs and end aprons down to 240 grit and got both ends glues up. After they were setup for awhile I drilled the legs for the square rosewood pegs and installed those also. The square pegs give the table a nice mission style flair. I like the way it looks.:)

Small accents like the pegs make a big difference.

Your table is shaping up (unlike my chests, which I didn't work on this weekend at all.)

Good Evening Guys,
Sorry if Im making this thread something akin to watching paint dry, Im really not trying to do that ;) :) Im just slow, sorry!

Anyway I got the base glued up tonite, the joints look good and the diagonals measure within 1/16", so Im happy.:) I will install the rest of the rosewood pegs tommorrow and then turn my attention to the top.

I promise not to bore you with all the sanding details ;)

Good Evening Guys,
I cut and sized both table top halves and layed them on top of the base just to get a feel of how the grain patterns would look. Im really quite pleased because if you will notice the pencil point, that is the center of the table. The inside boards compliment each other quite nicely !
Just thought I would share that. ;)
