You know allergies are really weird things. They can come and go without explanation. About 1962-63 I was working an evening shift in the post office. Now I remember my maternal grandfather getting off work around midnight and my grandmother always made him a "breakfast" when he got home; bacon, eggs, toast or biscuits. I was single at the time, but got in the same habit. I'd get home from work, shower, have some eggs, and go to bed. Within an hour I'd wake up, broken out in big whelps, not just bumps, but whelps all over like I'd been hit with a belt and itch almost beyond endurance. And after a couple of hours, it'd go away. So I finally went to the doctor and he said I must be allergic to something (brilliant, right?) and that he could do some tests for about $300 (I was making less than $500 a month) or I could experiment on my own. Sure enough, I quit eating eggs and I had no problem. But then one night I had a couple of eggs and a very miserable night. So I quit eating eggs for a couple of years, went back to eating them and no more problem.
Then, on July 9, 1990, we were in Anchorage in the RV and about 1 a.m. that morning, I work up breaking out in hives and itching so bad I could hardly stand it. I tried getting in a tub of hot water, then using Lanacane to stop the itching. I also started getting quite a headache, so at 1:30 a.m., I went to Humana Hospital. They gave me a shot and 2 prescriptions, and everything was OK.
On August 19, 1995, I woke up with some swelling under my eyes that morning; possibly an allergic reaction, but I spent about 2 hours with the string trimmer, then the rest of the day with the brush hog on the little Kubota. The next day, Sunday, my whole face was swollen thiat morning; right eye nearly closed, and a crusty, yellow substance started to form on my cheeks. I finally went to the emergency room in Corsicana and they gave me 5 pills there and three prescriptions. The doctor said it was an allergic reaction to something, with an infection starting on top of that. Obviously right, but allergic to what . . . I have no idea. It cleared up and hasn't happened again.
You just never know when an allergy may come or go.
