Turns out Im not allowed to have a shipping container as it is considered an "accessory structure". I cannot have any variety of "accessory structure" without a primary structure, which is a residence. MFRS

Sorry you can't have your storage container without a residence. But I wanted to add that there are containers available with side entries as well as roll up garage style doors. Lot's of options available.

I have a 50 acre piece of land that we use for hunting and screwing around with crops. I have a tc45d out there right now, just sitting out in the weather, and I want to get it under cover. The town won't let me build a pole barn, as there is no residence there and its zoned rural residential. Seems that my options are left as a shipping container, or a temporary building of some sort. Anything else you guys have seen used for tractor and implement storage that has worked well?

Do you have right-to-farm laws in your community? Start a tree farm. Might get you around some hurdles.

we do have things like that here, have to have 7 acres under cultivation and be able to document $10,000 in gross sales from the property.

I wonder if the town will let me get one. Do u keep attachments in there too? Did u add any other doors?

I keep my TLB, shreader, a 14' jon boat, 2 riding lawn mowers, and a host of other 'stuff' in my 40' high cube, set on a gravel bed with RR ties cross-wise in 5 points, works great. I'm planning to cut a man door in the side about 1/3 back. The source I got mine from had lots of optoins, some w/ front/back doors, some with full bi-fold doors on side, some w/ AC installed w/ windows and man door for site office, and I opted for a 1-trip, it's virtually brand new, was made only 6 months prior to my getting it, paid a little more but man it's show room new! I plan to add a second on a basement foundation (for storm cellar) with a truss roof between for open area that's protected from weather.

Might have to bite the bullet and erect a single room cabin. What do they define as a residence? If it only needs to have 4 walls, a door, and a roof a one-room shanty might be the ticket. If it is required to have plumbing, utilities and inspections - then go the registered road legal trailer route.

I say, sell that land and buy some where there is no "city" restrictions. Get out in the real country where taxes are lower and no one to tell you how, when or what to build on your property. Maybe even get out of the NY state with it's high taxes and get where you can legally buy and shoot a gun without permits.

Tree farm might have different rules. Worth checking out. If you could put some acreage into a classified forest or classified wildlife habitat, you might be able to justify a utility building to store the AG/forestry equipment in. Just thinking outloud. Check with our local county extension agent.
