From what I understand...my B1700 has a "dynamo" rather than an alternator...is it worth it to upgrade with the Alternator kit ?

I really would like to add some work lights and maybe an inverter...

For sure! I put one on my BX to power extra lights and a 12 volt heater off of Ebay for my cab. Lights are really bright and the heater keeps me warm without draining the battery.

The dynamo only puts out 15 amps max, when idling or at lower rpm even a couple of lights could start discharging the battery.

Do you have a number for a kit? My dynamo is fine so far, but I can't see replacing it when/if it goes out if there is a reasonably priced alternative. I've been looking at alternator case sizes, there isn't a lot of space to mount one.

What I am wondering is if there is a cheaper alternative to "the kit"...i.e., is there a something like a delco etc. that is easy to adapt without any fabricating?

Delcoes are huge compared to the space available with the side cover on.

The simplest way would probably be to find out what alternator was used in Kubota's conversion kit. Once you have that it would be easy (and cheap) to get one by number. Even the kit I saw had brackets and a harness to replace the external regulator so I don't think you will find a bolt up solution.

Hope you were the one who got it and saved yourself $200.

The hot rod world is dealing with problems like this for ages. Mini alternators exist - 4" diameter like this one. You can buy one on ebay for less than $100.

But you would have to fabricate a bracket and such.

Pine,
I did my BX22 this fall. I also added 3 6" halogens (1 facing forward-2 reverse) I couldn't have added them without the upgrade. I got the kit & had everything installed & back together in 45 minutes. Don't hesitate, go.
T-Man.

/pine,
If you want to add lights, consider a couple of LED lights. I had a 55 watt halogen on my BX23, and when that burned out I put on an LED from Northern Tool. From what I see it is every bit as bright and uses very little amperage. It is also a much whiter light. Someone said in a different thread that it uses 12 watts, but I can't say for sure. If you want the inverter, well that's another story. You could easily use multiple lights without draining the battery. Here's a link to the light:

If you're the one who got the kit will you post the alternator number. I've looked and see a bunch that look like the one in the kit, many are listed as Nippondenso/Kubota.
