I know a company that makes perspective hires pay for their own drug test. If they pass, the company re-imburses them. Its gotten that bad.

A couple years ago I watched something on PBS about West Virginia. They were talking to a guy that owned a coal mine. Starting wages were something like 60K. High school diploma required. He couldn't get anyone to pass the drug test. Not one. Yikes!

My Uncle owns a business supply company and his biggest problem is getting employee's that can pass a drug test too, Moss I will pass your info on.

Sad thing is, most urine tests are pretty easy to beat, but people continue to get caught.

Like everywhere else, drugs are a very real problem here, only here it's mostly pills and meth.

We have had trouble with prospective hirees passing drug screening as well. Most of that occurred five or six years ago though, and the last time we hired it was not nearly as bad. There is a manufacturing plant down the road from my house that takes a hair sample for pre employment testing.
In my experience there are good and bad workers in all age groups, the poor attendance is what is the most frustrating for our plant. FMLA on Fridays and Mondays is a regular occurance. In some departments it the absentee rate hits 20% of the workforce on those days.

I was talking to the HR Director of a very large company the other day and a subject somewhat on this line came up during our lunch. I made a comment about all the unemployed and underemployed people in our area. He said that he wasn't going to get in a discussion about how some unemployed didn't want to work because they could negatively affect their government assistance, but he did say that one of the biggest reasons there were so many unemployed younger people was that they couldn't pass a drug test. When I asked how pervasive that problem was, he told me that his company and two other large companies in the area had recently started requiring the temp agencies to drug test all the people they sent to them and immediately started running short on temporary workers. Then several of the temps that passed the test and were sent to them were a little shady on their legal work status, which made the problem even worse.
When I was still in the service, it seemed that we always had about a 10-17% failure rate on drug tests, not it appears that it's much worse.

Gunny that is so ture at least in our area. my brother does the hiring and firing for a company in the area and he says that 8 out of every 10 people that come there for a job under the age of 30 can't pass drug test. he says it's amazing how excited they are to go to work till they find out they got to take a drug test; then they start saying well i better think about it and see if this is what i want to do. i have worked around places where if they drug tested the employs there wouldn't be anybody left there to work, and the sad part is the managment know it because they drug test the same people all the time. the one's they know can pass.

I'm not advocating racism but it is a fact that it is something we are born with...not saying it can't be overcome but it will always exist...

And...BTW...it is my experience that those that are first to make accusations about race are usually the ones that are less capable of overcoming it (racism)...

Had a guy call up one time and ask if we required a drug test to hire before he asked if we were hiring.
