I will say, it's definitely a different environment, for everyone, these days. One thing that differs from the "old days" is how quickly some things change, most notably, technology.

There was a time back in the 90's when I knew all the latest computer technology. I was bleeding edge, but now I don't even bother with trying to keep up. As I type this message, I'm using a 5 year old laptop running Windows XP, but it does what I need it to do so I see no need to "upgrade".

I do try and think about the guys that are behind me, whether in years (I'm 45), or technological years (which is 100 years for every 18 months or so )

Those younguns are expected to pay off those mountains of debt that the last couple generations piled up and start from scratch since those wise elders destroyed the manufacturing sector...and of course its always someone else's fault be it politicians, wall street, unions, libruls , the one percenters, free traders etc

Very well said. The older generations brought the world to the brink, raised the younger generations and now are the first to point fingers. There is plenty of blame to go around.

I've been pretty lucky in that most of the kids i know are polite and hard working. Now the FOPs that i know, i believe i fall into that category, man oh man, a good number of them have actually said, "that's not my job" or i don't know how to do that! I'm told to use the admin staff so I brought in a defective part that needed to be sent back to the manufacturer, i had the box with the part already packed, printed instructions and freight label. Then i spent 15 minutes explaining the instructions, showing how the label would go on, according the instructions, then calling the freight company, all according to printed instruction. Fast forward, and we now have a young Iraqi girl, speaks pretty good english. Same situation, part needs to go back etc. I figure i'll have the same experience, but no, to my surprise, she looks at the box, the instructions, says she hasn't done this before, but if she needs any help she will call the company that's getting part back or the freight company shipping it. I think i was standing there with my mouth hanging open, because she had this amused look on her face when asking if there was anything else? So here is a young person and english isn't even their native tongue, taking initiative that apparently is beyond the older, more experienced?, people couldn't seem to accomplish. So that's the end of my rant in this rant thread.:laughing:

I think you speak for those of us with similar backgrounds and experiences. Keep in mind you are a generation behind so the 70-80 year old will better relate to your history and views.

And with every generation (mostly because of lame parents...IMO) WE lose "something"

History is always significant...views have not transgressed...(well enough anyway...IMO)

on a side note...compare the detail and craftsmanship between (stone projectile points for example)...points that are thousands of years old are made with much finer detail and precision than those that were made 200-300 years ago, many are crude in comparison...like the old saying goes..."use it or lose it" and it holds true today with everything...

Too many distractions for people........not like years ago;Mom has to,or THINKS she has to,work. Not bashing working Moms here,just saying, it would be better for SOME Moms to stay and guide the children while Dad is gone. Children ARE generally less mindful of other people today.
As I posted in the announcements forum, my Mom of 92 years was buried today.She only worked at home,though college educated.We kids and Dad were who she supported. My wife is the same,never working outside the home.
It's a shame that life is so complicated right now and distracting for the family members. don-ohio ^)
