Look at (google) a pp43c 'pistol'

762-25. Built on new receiver, welded closed stock ( originally folding), pistol length bbl, stick mags, fires from nfa friendly closed bolt.

I didn't realize anyone was building those. I had wondered, considering one of their huge advantages where they could be quickly stamped out cheaply by unskilled labor.

Parts kits are old, rcvr are new, thus new gun, and not a pistol made from a rifle.

I stopped by looking at Dicks for 7.62x54r 202 gr Brown/Silver bear soft points. They stock no 7.62x54r. Stopped at Academy because wife wanted a "tru-knock" metal bolt on D-loop. Academy had Monarch steel cased FMJ 7.62x54r for $7.99. It wasn't what I was looking for, but I figured that was cheap enough to grab two boxes. So far, all of the Monarch has fired perfectly.

Edit: ever notice archery supplies are hard to find in the 3rd week of general gun...

So, original poster back, with new account, cause old one is lost when they disabled the App.

I'm thinking of getting a pistol caliber carbine. I'm thinking of a HI Point 4095, .40 S&W. I like the idea of matching calibers with pistols I have, which is 9mm Makarov, .40 S&W, and 7.62x25 (.30 tokarev).

1st: who actually owns or has shot a few hundred rounds though one

2nd: any reason to favor 9mm vs .40 vs .45. 9mm would be cheapest, and I assume .45 ACP worst over 50 or so yards.

3rd: are these just "toys" or can you take white tail deer and such at real life ranges (50-100 yards).

Edit: 4th, any reason avoid these, other than they are UGLY

I don't have a hi point carbine. But I have been told by people that do, that they are OK. I didn't say "great, or wonderful" but OK. Meaning serviceable. I do know for a fact that a .45acp with a good expanding bullet and proper shot placement will kill a deer at 50 yards. I helped eat the deer.:) I wouldn't have too many qualms about a .40S&W at that range either with proper bullet and proper shot placement.

Of course as you go down in the energy scale, the chances of good clean kills just goes down. For instance .44 magnum probably better than a .45 acp, and on down. A good rifle round like 30-06 or .308 Winchester is better than any of them for delivering energy downrange. But on the other hand plenty of deer have been killed with a .22LR round. Head shots mostly, and illegally so I have been told. I would not know firsthand.

Might want to look at your Florida hunting laws regarding shooting deer with a carbine.
Taking game

Particularly, this quote:
"Centerfire semi-automatic rifles having magazine capacities of more than five rounds"

Also, there's some stipulations about the type of ammo that can be used.

I've always thought of the camp type carbines that take the same magazine for the pistol and carbine were interesting.... until last year, when I saw our neighbor pump 6 or 7 shots from a camp 9 into a groundhog and it got up and ran away. Dufus.

Interesting thread....and amusing too.

Obviously, you guys spend your money elsewhere (not on sticks). me, I have a number of big bore bolt rifles that cost upwards of 4 grand each and shoot... I don't consider a 2" group at 200 yards shooting, that is just MOA. I consider a good group at 200 to be 5 within 1/4" of each other with at least a couple down the same hole....

Of course that won't happen with factory ammunition and factory barrels. You have to go above and beyond that. From 338 on down, I load nothing but Bergers in Lapua brass (excepting a 300 win mag because Lapua don't produce a 300 WM case so thats Nosler.), Bartlien Barrels, Jewel triggers, Manners or Macmillan stocks, full bedding and clocking barrels.... and good optics too. Huskemaw, Zeiss, Vortex and Schmidt and Bender, in Badger Ordinance Rings and rails or Talley Rings.

But then I have my own private 250 yard range to build loads at. No interruptions, no nosey people.

I own eaxctly 2 handguns. A Model 27 44 Smith with open sights and a 460 Smith 14" barrel Deer Hammer with a Leupy on top. They get handloads too. 240 Noslers or Sierra's in Starline Brass with Lil' Gun.

I look at fine guns like a sports car. if you want performance, you have to pay the price. Cheap don't work.

Good point, I hadn't thought about that
Which kinda brings me back around to this; everything one of these doea; something else does better. Got .270 Win for hunting, pistols and shotguns for defense, .22 for play....

Any idea what bullet? That can make a huge difference.
