IMO, The Sat V was the most impressive mobile machine ever built...The images of those liftoffs are burned into my visual memory...

Do they even teach engineering students how to use a slide rule anymore?

Astronomy is the science that is like a drug in the way it can remove you from all senses of our material, terrestrial world...

Engineering Students were expected to learn all about slide rules on their own time. No teaching!

Dr. Strangelove. One of a few of my all time favorite movies. Have it on VHS, must get CD.

If someone here could weigh in on the little matter of man kinds inability to put humans through the Van Allen (sp?) radiation belt and "eventually" according to NASA we can leave low earth orbit, to possibly go to the moon and beyond, well this would be of great interest to me. It's no joke! Recently, NASA has said this several times as if the manned moon landings never happened. Another NASA spokesperson clearly stated that, that (60s) technology was destroyed when queried!

Ya, I'm confused!

Please; you've not confused me. But, you do keep evading the original question and attempt some diversions to avoid an answer.

Can't recall changing the question and I doubt if your explanation on the state of matter explains anything.

Now how about answering the question. If you don't know the answere that is fine but do acknowledge that fact.

Egon...I have documented your own quotes in my replies...

Again...here is your original query:
I explained this by linking to a reference that answered your question how ice accumulates under freezing conditions...

You replied in post #191 of the other thread with a question that that the link I provided just answered...then again in post #200 of the other thread you ask the original question
How does this ice keep accumulating if the temperatures are below freezing? That is the question!
which was answered hereAlso in the same post you said:
By the way you seem to have forgotten there is a triple point for the state of many solids, fluids and vapours.
Thus my facetious remarks about dark matter...(sorry to confuse you...was meant as a wise crack)

Now in post #7in this thread you ask:
Now back to the original issue; what type of climatic conditions must exist for glacier's to form and increase in size??
this is after you stated"
You do not have to go into the making of a glacier.
also in post #200 of the other thread...

So in actuality all you questions have been answered...I do know the answers as I provided them...although I am much more versed on the subject than I was...

Now that that is settled...What do you about El Ninos ?

Actually, I had to take a class in slide rule at R.P.I. in 1969. Up front above the chalk boards was about a 12' long K&E (in yellow).

FYI: a slide rule assists in multiplication of scientific numbers by adding logarithms of each number (based on the log(number's) length. At about the same time, HP came out with a hand held calculator (using Reverse Polish notation) for $250. Almost immediately after that Sears Roebuck offered a beauty with a 'conventional' input scheme for $89. I still have mine. Needs a power supply. Funny, in ALL my classes that year, exact numerical solutions to math, physics and chemistry test questions were not needed. All the rich guys with their HPs never got to use them. THEN I took a job at the computing center helping run an IBM 360 computer system (as in 360 degrees on a compass). The 360 multiprocessor was needed by NASA to perform real-time moon orbit insertion calculations because the Moon is not just a uniform lump of green cheese. It has a center of mass not in the geometric center of the moon. (Iron lumps). You orbit the center of mass. If not done properly, you would skid to a crash halt on the surface. Oops. The real satisfaction ocurred when Apollo 10 emerge from its swing around the moon safely. That meant 11 was good to go.

When I was in school...learning to use a slide rule was taught as part of the (background) math curriculum for engineering students... a proper slide rule was on the requisite book/material list...

The mission profile was established to minimize travel time through the Van Allen Belts (just a few minutes). They got about 2 rems (same as a chest x-ray ?). That's 1/5th of what you get from cosmic rays by being outside on the earth's surface. The danger was recognized. The astronauts didn't wax their tractors, they were military expendables, to be blunt.

THANKS For the moment, that somewhat puts my mind at ease.

Still no answere as to how ice accumulates when all is below freezing .

Now that the question has been reinstated how about answering the question! Your quotes may be interesting but they do not cover the conditions of how the major ice caps formed.
