All good but how does the snow develop & fall when all is below freezing?

Happens all the time, Warm air mass overriding a cold air mass, cools down, drops snow. Nothing mysterious about it. Or just cold air hitting a mountain range, rises, cools further and drops, yep, snow again. It's the same thing that causes snow anywhere, air mass cooling below the temp it can retain its moisture.

The important part is that the winter snow fall has to exceed the summertime melting.

I spent two winters in Alaska and I can assure you it snows when the temp is below freezing. I see the same thing every winter in my back yard.

Now why does the ice form? Snow compacts, doesn't melt and pressure and time do thier thing.

For whatever reasons we have lost a united national spirit...and are experiencing a divided society...
Some of the earlier posts in this thread (about the Gemini and Apollo programs) brought back some of the best memories I have of just being an American I can remember...
A good majority of the technological advances we are enjoying today were initiated in the "space race" era...
I only hope our future holds something as special as that time and it is not just terror and threats of war that bring us together again...

How do you account for quality of life and oil spills? The gulf coast was hit pretty hard there by BP. Exon did a job on Alaska. Any search on pipeline oil spills gives tons of awful images. Then we have fracking and the polluted aquifers.

I like oil - but the way it is handled - it is like that guy who can get you a good deal out the back door if you meet him at closing time. - The track record doesn't help oil.

Thanks Mace. But what I'm interested in is the conditions prevalent for ice masses to increase in volume.

Snow accumulating in winter and not melting in the summer. Nothign mysterious about it.

I don't like oil spills and in qualifying oil as good, I take into consideration things like that. I also factor in the overall benefits of it, which I find to be so significant that I'm still a huge fan of oil and what it does to give us the lifestyle that we all enjoy today. Go back in history just 100 years and compare what it took to survive back then. Oil is the biggest game changer in the history of the world. Next would be electricity, and then communication, which both rely on oil.

I have no excuse or comments on most of what you listed, but the BP oil spill should never of happened. But corrupt oversight and too much influence from green lobbyist created that scenario. And did oil ever wash up on shore anywhere? I remember all sorts of people out on the beaches looking for it, read to clean it up, but where did it come ashore?

With modern advancements, pipelines are safer and cleaner in transferring oil then ships. This alone should be a good reason to develop our own oil resources and stop shipping it here from the Middle East. Sadly, a lot of the problems that we do have from oil is because of political influence because of lobbyist who raise money from people that hate the oil industry. The more they raise, the more influence they have over the politicians, and the more issues we have. There was a time when environmental oversight was needed, now it's become a weapon to wield power that we the working class people have to suffer through.

I think we still do, but no argument that things have gotten way out of hand, much like the obsession with "safety" in automobiles. Alas, "government common sense" is an oxymoron.

Eddie: Your logic, explanations and civility are to be commended. However, keep it for now, or you will get banned from Huffpost and Facebook.

Yes; all true and good and understood long time ago. Now the only part left is how does all that moisture get into the clouds if all is below freezing?? It should require a considerable amount of precipitation for ice cap formulation that may be miles thick.

Not much of the estimated 210,000,000 gallons washed up on shore, partly because the majority of the oil (some studies suggest over 90%) was sunk to the sea floor by Corexit 9500 and 9527

Most agree that was preferable to letting it just wash ashore- some studies suggest there are large concentrations of the emulsified goo on the sea floor. If they could have gotten enough skimmers in place in time much more of the oil could have been recouped.
Hopefully the Corexit works like Dawn and that oil is well on its way to being fully broken down

Have 2 family members that worked on the spill, 1 as an at sea crew manager. They were Both satisfied overall with how the cleanup was done.

I was dating a girl at the time whose sister is married to a guy in Florida and they rent out jet skis and pontoon boats to people. Zero damage to them or their business, but they where still trying to claim over a million dollars from the government in restitution, or something like that. The last I heard, they didn't get anything, but it wasn't done and they where still fighting for their share of the pie.
