I am still contemplating the purchase of a PHD for my Kubota L175. Since I have never used a PHD I am curious. My 3-point has no down force. It just lets down the implements by gravity. Will a PHD work OK like this? Also would a 18hp tractor like mine drive a 12" auger in rocky soil? Any input would be helpful.

Thanks

I'm sure your 18 HP is plenty to run a PHD. Make sure you have plenty of sheear bolts when digging holes in rocks.

I have an older Kubota B1550 (17 or 18 hp). I use the post hole digger with a 12" auger. In very hard ground it didn't work very well but once we had some rain and the ground was kinda soft it dug very well. The auger part was brand new at the time so I guess that helped too. As far as down force is concerned the weight of the PHD will put enough force down if the ground isn't hard.

That's the way the vast majority of them work. Lower it slowly as it digs or it may simply screw itself into the ground and then you have some of that "manual labor" to get it back out.
