Well, I did end up buying the machine and picked it up last Saturday. Before I puchased it I did the following.
1. Ran the VIN number through by local dealer. He verified the owner and were it was purchased. Yes, the owner of the Ranger and the seller were the same people.
2. Verified there was a lien on the Ranger. The lien was through Polaris and I was given the pay-off amount which I cut a seperate check for, made out to the bank that Polaris used to finance the Ranger. The owner said he would send me the letter from the bank that indicates the loan is satisfied when he received it.
3. Did not give ANY money until I physically picked it up. Ran the Ranger and inspected it. Looked brand new and drove the same.
4. Found out he purchased a 4 year extended warranty through Polaris. I'm in the process of transferring to me.
5. The owner gave me the original bill of sale, Certificate of Origin and all paperwork he had. He did add a few accessories that the dealer installed and had all the paperwork for them.
Overall, I think the original owner was trustworthy. He showed all proof of ownership and most important, I know where he lives in case something happens. I'm guessing he's in his early/mid 30's with a wife and 3 young kids. If I had to guess, he just needed out of his loan/payments and wanted this machine gone. He indicated to me that he was in real estate and just sold-off some property that was not profitable and currently doesn't have a job.
Fingers Crossed,
Doug
