I said, "<font color=red>Anyone want to make a bet on just what the real threat to one's safety in that area really is? Wild beasts or fools with handguns?</font color=red>" And I've got the proverbial dollar to lay on the table against the proverbial hole in the donut. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

You said, "<font color=blue>I'll accept attacks, accidents, both or any other combination.</font color=blue>"

You want to lay out the criteria for this wager that will satisfy you?

After all when I put the pedal to the metal on this DSL stuff happens./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Harv,

I would wager fools with hand guns are the biggest threat. Why do you need full metal jacket for fishing. Is that in case the fish don't cooperate?

I can't wait for deer season. I get to be around folks who can handle a gun, do not drink in camp or on the stand and all are not only literate but most are well educated professionals, managers and business owners. It will be real nice knowing that though many of them own handguns none of them would I classify as a fool. I am glad I will be rubbing shoulders with sportsmen who not only would not shoot newborn bambis but would condemn and report andyone who did. I am glad none of the folks I hunt with would profess to protect their families against wild bears and then turn around and question what makes man think he has more value than a bear. Most of all it will be so nice to hunt in a rural area not proliferated with families who move in from other areas and then whine about how humans have taken away animal habitat even though they are guilty of the same thing.

Michael, don't tell Ozarker, but I did a real quick hit of the local news from that paper that carried the bear story. I'm not going in planning on losing that hole I stole from that donut. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

The genius of the NRA has been their ability to link all gun owners into one bag.

Last year was the first year in a long time my dad didn't go deer hunting, he's seventy six now. One of my best buds has hunted his whole life and does so for any reason at all. I probably have more hunting male friends than nonhunting male friends.

But even those politically enlightened to my position still have an ear for the song of the NRA about all guns being equal.

It's a shame. There is a distinct difference between the educated hunter or marksman or person with a permit to carry and the single woman with a pistol under her mattress that's only accessible when there's emergencies like her being gone and the kids being bored.

Sorry MDNY, I disagree with you about humans being the supreme being on earth. I am an animal lover. We love our dogs. I pick up mice and take them out into the field and let them go. Ditto on snakes. We have spiders hanging on webs on our front porch and we treat them like pets.

But the Book of Genesis says that man came first, then woman, then the animals. Seems like its says man is to reign over the animals. We have souls, animals don't.

No way would I be caught camping in the national forest without a handgun for protection. The law only matters if you have to use it, then you're better off going to jail than getting killed.

It is actually kind of a silly bet and one that you can't win no matter what your DSL does. The data you need doesn't exist because nobody records it. The data you think will prove your point will actually hurt your case.

<font color=blue>If you equate intelligence with the ability to communitate then chimps, apes and other (ancestors) are as equal, yet we continue to slaughter them so someone oversees can have a stronger version of a cultural viagra pill.</font color=blue>

I wouldn't use ability to communicate as a measure of intelligence. My dog communicates with me all the time. If you enter my property, he'll communicate with you as well.

This thread could easily get real silly, real fast. Talk to me about the intelligence of animals the next time you see one growing his own food or keeping domestic stock instead of relying totally on nature and instinct

FMJ does less tissue damage than hollow points but gives more penetration. He had them for bears, not fish. Not so sure I would have selected the light weight 9mm for that task however. He is really lucky that he managed to hit vital organs and put the bear down. I don't believe I have ever heard of a bear being taken with such a light round.

Alan L, Iam so much in agreement with you that we must be long lost brothers.
The older I get the more I cherish nature and natures right to exsist, but as you said the man upstairs has given us authority over all creatures.
As for MDNY,he assumes that everyone with a gun is an idiot,am I to asume that all bears are killers?
I once had my campsite ransacked by a bear as we(wife and I)shivered in our tent,I had a 357mag with me at the time....never drew it from the holster...I was 25 at the time.
I still have the Igloo cooler with teeth holes right through it.......Mike

While I was moose hunting a couple of years ago, a black bear appeared out of the brush - about 75 feet in front of me. I saw him and he saw me. After a brief staring competition, he bounded off to the right, stopped, and stared at me again. I picked up a stick and threw it off to my left. He went chasing after it. We played "stick" for about 20 minutes, then he just ambled off.

I was apprehensive at first, even with my .308 sitting ready across my lap. Would I have been this cool without my rifle - no (I wouldn't even be sitting in the woods). In this way (call it cowardly - I really don't care) I find that my weapon allowed me to get closer than I normally would have. My rifle allows me to experience nature in a relaxed environment - one where I can actually take the time to appreciate my surroundings.

I don't think it's right for us to condemn animals based on human rules. A rather weak analogy that just popped into my head - power boats give sail boats the right of way.
