The news stated that black bears have killed only 5 people since the turn of the century. I assume we have killed more black bears than that.

My comments either I posted them wrong, didn't proof read them or were just not understood.

I am for nature, wildlife, protection of all things. My comments were that humans are not the supreme creatures. So animals don't raise lifestock, plant food etc. They are wild creatures who live in nature and survive there.

All gun owners are not idiots, and I didn't say they were. Not all hunters are idiots, I didn't say they were. I have family and friends who hunt, they respect nature and what it provides for them. They are not bambi killers, and deal with those who are.

They enjoy hunting and do so on their lands or camps. They provide for nature and do use what they kill. They do not hunt out of season and they won't needlessly kill an animal (out of season).

I bought land, to enjoy, I provide seed and nuts for the birds and such, I will not and do not feed large animals as I choose not to create easy targets.

I will remove any illegal hunting stand, report any illegal hunting and prosecute anyone trespassing. These are my rights.

We are not supreme, and animals may in fact have souls, can someone prove otherwise. While I cannot quote the good book, I do know that the person upstairs never intended the level of destruction, despair and unecessary cruelty we create.

I have my views, others have theirs. One thing I do is respect them, and enjoy a good debate. One thing I don't understand is why the NRA is against assault rifles, is there a real need for them.

Oh and my wife wants a gun in the house to protect us, I am not for it, but will take lessons on proper use, handling before we dicuss it further. And I would like to register for hand gun use so NYS won't take my fathers S&W 44Mag away, instead I can have the barrel filled with lead and displayed.

He has hunted for most of his life, and you know what he never got a deer once. I think he just enjoyed being out there.

Harv, thanks.

MDNY,

"Heck if GW Bush has his way the forests will be gone, the artic preserve will be plundered and the soil will be contaminated.

The forest will be gone from proper management? Is it better that the forests be allowed to burn due to the lack of management?

The arctic preserve plundered? I am not sure what this rhetoric means.

The soil contaminated? Are you refering to the ANWAR area? If so, then perhaps you are not aware that there are very stringent regulations on any activities in the area. They even have to have a device like a diaper to catch any possible fluid leaks.

By the way, I would think that a person that enjoys the outdoors and has a farm as our President does would be a decent steward of the land.

Owning a farm and being a good steward of the nations wilderness are not one in the same. Our current administration feels that we are better off drilling in the artic preserve for oil that may not even yield much.

Proper forest management does not mean letting the logging companies clear cut and destroy hundred year old trees, logging roads bring in more trouble than they are worth. Poachers, dumpers and those who normally could not be there are now there.

Too many times political decisions are made to benefit the few and not the many. This is fact and it goes well beyond logging, mining and other areas.

Can we say Enron, why doesn't our VP tell us who was at the secret meetings and what they talked about? Why did it take MCI to go under before we decided we needed reform, we needed it before Enron?

To put this back on track. We need clear thought and vision if our forests are going to be here in full and intact in 50-100 years or else they will be gone and our forest will look like the Amazon, oh wait what forests.

Just for the record: Genesis 1:28: God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds in the air, and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Members of the NRA might not "need" an assault rifle, but you don't "need" your gameboy either. Sometimes its a pleasure to appreciate the craftsmanship of a firearm, and to freely enjoy its power, in a safe and lawful manner. Much like driving a Porsche on the Autobahn in Germany.

Bush is only wanting to do in the rest of the country what Daschle got done in South Dakota.

I'm familiar with the oil and gas industry. Lots of wells could be drilled and lots of oil could be pumped out of Alaska without significantly affecting the environment. Every barrel of oil we get out of Alaska is a barrel of oil the Saudi's and Iraqi's aren't holding us hostage for. And, the people in Alaska want the drilling to happen.

Most hunters and NRA members are animal lovers. Most true sportsmen strictly adhere to the rules, and hunt only in season, and use any animals harvested. The seasons are designed to allow a contolled thinning out of over-populated species. The harvesting that goes on helps to assure a healthy population, whereas, the alternative is large numbers of sickly animals fighting for a finite supply of food and shelter.

I don't hunt. I can't bring myself to end the life of a healthy animal - I even throw back fish that I catch. I don't like to kill stuff. However, I understand why it is necessary for others to do it. I hate what happens to beef animals, but I'm the first in line for the barbeque.

"Every barrel of oil we get out of Alaska is a barrel of oil the Saudi's and Iraqi's aren't holding us hostage for."

Oil made the Saudi's wealthy, and the Bin Laden family prospered from the Saudi's business. Therefore, I support any effort to reduce the demand or need for foreign oil. Solar, wind, battery, or any other alternative power source I support too.

MDNY,Here is my view on assault rifles and the NRA:
ASSAULT RIFLES:These are not magical weapons with amazing powers, they are like any sporting rifle or shotgun except for a utilitarian stock and a large magazine,a shotgun with 00 buckshot will make you just as dead.
NRA:The NRA philosophy says this:
1. It is our constitutional right to own a firearm.
2. Don't burden us law abiding citizens with more rules, instead prosecute the hell out of the ones using guns to commit crimes.............Mike

My heart goes out to the parents. No one can understand the pain they are going through, from this tragic accident.

From the article posted here and what I have seen on the news, it doesn't sound like a gun would have helped. Unless I missed something, the parents were not there at the very split second moment of the actual attack. I hope you are not advocating shooting every bear that wanders into camp. That would significantly reduce the current bear population. Bear siteings are now all over our local news, being only a few hundred miles from where this happened. Hopefully, none will be shot just because this event has many people spooked.

I agree with other posters here that people in bear country, need to be educated on how to live and react to bears. Haven't been down in the catskills, where this took place, lately, but there should be strick regulation on how garbage is handled, and bear warnings and posters on how to respond. Just returned from Yosemiti and Sequoia national parks, where anti-bear trash recepticles are the norm, along with information on what to do when you encounter a bear.

I am not anti-gun or anti-hunting, but I am more threatened or concerned by hiking in the woods during deer season, then I am hiking in known bear country without a gun. I know many more people that have had close calls with being shot at, then being attacked or encountering bears at very close range.

John, I don't see where anyone here is suggesting that we start carpet bombing bear habitats, on the contrary most seem respect our wild creatures.
My whole point to this was simply, that when beast CHOOSES to attack man,man should never come out second best.
The bear that was shot would have never been more than a bear that poor baby might have found a cure for cancer,we will never know.......Mike

AlanL,

I am in agreement with you that a true sportsman (like a gentlemen) adheres to the conduct befitting the title. I know many true sportsman and while I don't hunt (same reason as you) I repsect their choice to do so.

What I dislike is being hostage in my home during the hunting season on my property because a bullet doesn't know the difference between my head and the tree next to me. We are both very dense objects (yes it was meant as humor by me).

This thread has gone many ways, but most of all it allows us all who do respect this forum and us all as members to view our opinions. To that I say thank you.
