I think a gate, while even open does a lot to keep the numb & curious out. It's pretty hard not to notice that you are passing through a gate, especially if there's only a few feet on each side of the driveway to the gate post's. A few "keep out" & "private road" signs before the gate, along with one on the gate post should get their attention. If you have the space, a turnaround just before the gate should keep most of the "numb" people out that just can't see the signs.

Signs don't work....dogs don't work....and driveway alarms don't work (but Dakota Alert MURS is the best one I've found).....I've got all three. If people CAN drive up a drive, they will.

IF you're really serious about privacy, get a gate. Doesn't have to be solar, you can run #6 UF underground 1/2 mile and still run most openers. As for visitors, they learn to call ahead, or call from the gate. Ours do....or they go home. :D

Get a game camera that has a flash. You want your photo taken?

Several things.
What is a GSD dog?
I have a 9 yo Doberman that is still in tact. He runs the property and wouldn't hurt anybody. He is aggravating wanting to be petted all the time. I have heard him at night fighting something. He is vicious sounding but always comes back. We are looking for a female Doberman since we lost ours last year. They are hard to find.

We have a huge 120 pound black with tan feet G.S.D. and he barks at every truck, car, bicycle, or pedestrian that comes by. If someone is at the gate then he goes wild to get outside as quickly as possible. I am amazed at his hearing, even with the TV blasting, he knows when someone is walking down the road outside. We don't live more than 75 feet off the road so we get a lot of barking but we know when something is amiss outside.
Best watch dog I ever had. When he is outside, no one wants to come thru our gate, his head resembles a bears head and his huge teeth repels all boarders.

My GSD Mickey (RIP) was between 125 and 130 lbs in his prime. I got him for security after learning that 1 in 19 houses here suffered a B&E and finding out a good dog and a good fence are the two best things here where I live for security. I already had a good fence so I went looking for a dog and found my boy. He was extremely territorial but outside the yard he was very good with people. His challenge bark was the loudest bark I have ever heard and I know it was very intimidating to everyone, even friends who knew him. If any lowlife ignored his bark I'm sure one look at him would have been more than enough to scare them off to easier pickings.

The new pup will be more disposed to "roaming" if you don't have him cut. That is why all my critters get fixed. I live way out in the sticks...I mean back in the woods on 71 acres and a long driveway. I tried the harbor freight driveway alarm and it would get messed up occasionally and just quit working. I finally got tired of the junk and got one more expensive off of ebay, maybe $40 or so, and it works flawlessly rain or shine. It helps to pay a little more and check the reviews on the product to see how many really like it and how it is used. The biggest problem I have is deer moving across the driveway at night to go and feed. That gets the monster chihuahuas going....lol.

Snickie (aka ferocious puppy)

Doodle (more laid back)

We have 2 Dakota Alerts and are happy with them. The dogs learn to look out when it goes off. The motion detection ones will pick up animals or people walking through too.

The Dakota Alert MAPS BS Kit works really well for us. It uses a metal detecting probe sensor buried along the driveway. The receiver will work with several probes at once so you can install the first one at the end of your driveway and another closer to the house so you know if they made it that far. With the metal detecting probes there are no false hits on animals. Dakota Alert also has motion detectors that work with the base station if you need them. Best prices we found for their products are on Amazon.
