Any dog breeders amongst us?

I always thought white GSD's were cool looking. It wasn't until I was seriously looking into getting a quality European GSD with a great pedegree that I learned that a white GSD is considered "not acceptable" in the GSD catagory. I don't know why, but every breeder I spoke with told me that I'd never find a reputable European breader of GSD's with a white GSD. I still don't know why. My mother in law had one and she really liked it. I think she bought it mainly because every book she found on GSD's said that it was "defective" and unacceptable. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Now the solid black GSD's are acceptable. Why is that?

White markings on a GSD is a flaw,all GSD's have a certain amount of black,whether it be around the muzzle or black all over,IE: Black and Tan/Black and Red/Black and Sable/Solid black.
If you had white markings on a Black and Tan etc...that would be an indication of a GSD with a mix of something else in it besides GSD,where as like I say all GSD's have some black in in them.
A white German Shepherd is unique ,but they come from white x white,where as a solid black can come from a black and sable x black and tan or black and red x black and tan.

That's actually what I figured it was I jsut had to say what I said. That's the same way with Britt's, black in the nose or in the coat is unnacceptable, as is too tall or too long dogs.

It's funny the way some things are serious faults and other things aren't. A white coated GSD is a disqualifying fault, but a long coated GSD isn't even though it doesn't meet the "standard".
A lot of people feel white is unacceptable because it would be like our troops wearing blaze orange. You just don't see many brightly colored service or guard dogs and that's primarily what they are used for.

When I was a youngster, we had a white GSD, but his parents were "normal" black and tan. The breeder was going to destroy the pup until my mother offered to take him, and also promised not to breed him. Don't know what it's like today, but back then (early '60s) the AKC wouldn't even register him.

I'm told that there are no white GSD's. Those are a mix breed according to what I've read. I personally think it is sort of tacky to tell someone who owns a white "GSD", that their dog is defective and unacceptable.

However, I paid somewhat big bucks to have my GSD imported from Hungry (he's in my picture), and he has no white. You can't really tell from that pic, but he is all black down his back with tan and sable sides and under belly. Even though he costs quite a bit, I have to admit that I'm pleased with him. He has perfect teeth, coat, health, and is by far the most intelligent dog I've ever owned. Besides that, he "imprinted" to me. It kills my wife that he will do anything and everything I ask, but he ignores her. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
