2 freezers can be run by my 5kw diesel generator, have 400 gals diesel on site and bulldozer and tractor always full.

I wonder about running a generator or other engines. Obviously it depends on the location and the situation but the sound of a running engine might carry pretty far if it is the only thing running. Solar and a battery bank might seem like a better choice... but generally panels have to be visible to work so might also attract some unwanted attention.

That assumes that there will be a neighborhood left to create one from. What would happen in the aftermath of a global disaster like... nuclear war? Noone can know what will happen, so it's always best to assume the worst.

A nuclear war would create few direct effects in my area, since there are no military targets within 500 miles of my house. I haven't completely abandoned 19th century technology. I even have a 5' one man buck saw, and a 2 man "misery whip" for making firewood, as well as a couple bow saws. I have a homestead orchard that provides apples, plums, pears, cherries, apricots and figs, acres of berries, ettediouscetera.

No, I am not a survivalist, I'm just a typical rural guy with typical rural neighbors, far enough from any city that refugees are unlikely to be a problem. They would have to be really motivated to get here on foot, and somebody would surely put a round through Mad Max's engine block, so he would be on foot too. My survival plan for TEOTWAWKI is to go right on living like I have been.

My wife and I watched Jericho up until it was cancelled....We have often wondered if they were not pressured to cancel the show. Could it be the government became concerned it would give people ideas....? I'm just sayin'

It was a pretty dumb show, with the heroes running around in a gas hog. It would have been more realistic if they had converted a pickup to steam and had to worry about where to find dry firewood to feed the boiler.

The premise was also pretty stupid; a disease had killed off all the adults, causing the collapse of society. At the time of the show, all the kids were grown up, but society had not recovered at all. We know from history that plagues are wonderful things for the survivors. Vast resources, like land, are available just for the taking. Labor is in short supply, so wages skyrocket. Twenty years after a great plague, life is pretty sweet for the survivors.

Hes right there was a different Jericho, I tivoed it by mistake. I saw why right away that one was cancelled.

I really liked Jericho, but it seems my tastes in entertainment don't match the key demographics.

Are you sure?

The military has a habit of hiding things so one can never be sure. That, and there is this nasty little thing called nuclear fallout that can travel for hundreds or even thousands of miles, depending on the prevailing winds.

That map is very odd. Notice it says "Sample" in the bottom left.

The plume from Tampa FLA, makes since if ONLY McDill was hit. I assume the plume off Miami was from the air base that used to be at Homestead. In a full exchange me thinks there would be quite a few more red streaks from the cities. In NC Ft Bragg/Pope aka Fayetteville is not red. The plume on the coast seems to be from Charleston and not from a strike on Camp Lejune and Goldsboro would certainly be hit because of Seymour Johnson.

My guess is they assumed nuke strikes only on SAC bases and missle sites but even that does not make total sense to me.

The book, "Alas Babylon" was about a post nuclear exchange world set in FLA. The book was set in the early 60s and I thought that the town was modeled on Ft. Myers which was a small little town in the middle of no where. Wikipedia says the town in the book was Mt Dora. Ft Myers was a good place to survive because there would be little to no fall out but Mt Dora I think would get fallout from Tampa and maybe Orlando. Anywho.

I need to reread the book since the Florida described in the book is GONE, regardless of which small town was use as a model, buried under concrete and condos...

Later,
Dan

The really interesting thing is many people know something is going to happen soon. The common thread between all is it's coming, get ready.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and hope to be one of the ones still standing so you can look around and ask "Where were you when the SHTF?"

I watched part of a show, the prepper was dressed in buckskin and walked along the road looking for roadkill to take home and cook. He found one small groundhog, looked it over, picked it up and when he got home he threw it on the kitchen counter.
His three kids are being taught the "skills" to survive, he doesn't believe in guns so he has them learning martial arts, throwing hatchets, etc. His alarm system are birds that he keeps close by feeding them.
At that point I turned off the TV and went to bed.

Isn't the prevailing wind West to East? Wouldn't that change the direction of the fallout that is wind borne? We have been getting Fukishama's fallout here on the east coast.

Everybody in my neck of the woods speeds up when they see a deer. They try to hit it so they can take it home after the gamewarden files it as an accident. They don't like that deer jacking charge all that much!
