Oil & Fuel any easy way to get gas in the tank?

Ditto on the 5 gal kerosene container on the hood or wherever you can and using a cheap kerosene squeeze pump. Even better is an expensive ($15!) 2 D-cell battery operated kerosene pump. Search ebay. I used to pour into the big funnel, difficult and messy.

Somewhere on these fora I have a picture of the pump setup.

Is there an easy way to lift a heavy 5 gallon diesel jug up to fill the gas tank? Any way to prevent spillage? I'm about to fill up my MF 1531 for the first time.
Thanks alot.

For the tractor: I use some of the older plastic 6 gallon diesel cans of the kind that had the vent on rear (i.e. not those newer crappy self venting ones). However, I usually only put 4 gallons in the can which allows me to tilt the can quite a bit so that the can spout spot is in the tractor tank filler neck before fuel starts coming out - so absolutely zero spillage for me. For this reason, I prefer the 6 gallon can over the 5 gallon as I can tilt it more before fuel starts coming out so I prevent spillage. 4 gallons is rather easy for me to lift but you could always put less in it as others have mentioned. (for a quick estimate, estimate 8lbs per gallon on weight and it will get you in the ballpark of your weight).

For our riding lawnmower, which the wife uses mostly: I bought one of those cans that has a molded handle on top as well as a molded handle along the backside (shaped tall and narrow, kinda like the old jeep cans of yesteryear). My wife likes it because the can has handle grips for both both hands and she can easily control it and I usually do not fully fill the can on it either to further help her. Of course, I also try to be a good husband and fill the mower when I remember, but my memory is not what it once was -LOL.

I do it kinda like sandman suggested. I keep one 5 gallon diesel container 3/5th full that I use to fill the tractor without spilling fuel on the hood, along with two more 5 gallon diesel containers kept full to refill the first container back to 3/5th. The tractor has a 6.3 gallon tank so I try to refill it at or before it gets to 1/2 tank.

LOL!!!! Can't believe it hasn't happened yet.

I've been using one of these for the last 6 years: Han-D Fuel Transfer Pump - 3958951 | Tractor Supply Company

I replaced the fuel line on it about 3 years ago, other than that it has work flawlessy and no mess and no fuss. Cheap and no lifting the gas cans up. I just recently had to buy a second 5 gallon jug. Just switch it over to the new jug and off I go with 5 more gallons. Takes about 2 minutes to pump about 4 gallons into my tractor.

For those of you who have "drilled" hole in those wonderful fuel cans we have today. Didn't your worry about the plastic shavings getting into the tanks?

LOL! are you referring to lbrowns setup ?

ymarianne- if your mf1531 is anyway the same as my fathers mf1250 with tank in back behind seat, he just rests bottom corner on the fender and pours its in. for me personally, I had better luck then him. My BX24 , I just open the seat and rest jug on the tank and then tip to pour. the first half gallon is bit tricky as not to get any splashes but then I just put spout all the way in filler hole. Since I have one of those crappy jugs that take forever to empty, I just walk away and let it fill on it own. A 5 gallon jug in 6.1 tank that is nearly empty, I have no worries for those who are on the saftey police team. . When I fill the gas in cheapo tractors, I use a kerosene hand pump since there is no way i can pour without splashing all over the place with the new gov. regulated gas cans.

I keep a rag tied on the tractor somewhere and wipe the spill up with that. It keeps the hood nice and shiny.

Lowes and Home-depot--are selling 5 gallon tanks with new on/off handle it a lot easier with this switch no spills.

It's the same tank just a new nozzle with a close and open switch works good.

I turned it upside down when I drilled the hole.

Anyone have any luck with the Flo n Go transfer pumps? Kinda like the Han-D that jwstewar posted. I don't know how it would be with diesel but it didn't work with gasoline (which is what it is sold for). I bought one, by the time I went through my first five gallon can, the seals were done and it would not pump anymore. Brought it back, got a second one, same thing. Back to pouring cans and dripping gas and fuel all over :(
