Mystery solved. The problem is in the underground line that runs from my house to my shop. Apparently, it has two lines in it and one is not hot. He moved some of the breakers around and now I have 110 everywhere in the shop again, the only thing I lost was my 220 outlet. I never used it anyway. Thanks again to all you guys for your help. It was fun.

It's a problem everywhere...initial build many of the "sparkies" don't label their circuits very well. And then after that, your breaker box becomes a total mess..."I need a circuit here so I'll just steal this one". Hope they "capped" your 240v line in the box rather than "snipping" it...you might want that line someday.

Working with an electrician on a new HVAC system and was looking at a panel about 5x5'. All it had was 3 wires coming in but were taped off at the end. The wires were about 1/2 dia. I slammed the door shut and heard a big POW. It blew a small chunk out of the panel. They were hot 480 leads from somewhere and the tape must have been thin. Our engineer brought the contractor who installed it and he was as white as a ghost and humble as all get out when he saw it.

Glad you got you problem figured out.

Why energize the panel until the ends are secured? Sounds like a recipe for disaster there but I'm a mere amateur that knows too much about wiring. Guessing when that "Pow" happened the air got nasty and a few people excused themselves to the bathrooms.

But he didn't tell you why it is not hot now?

Get a plug in AC voltmeter and keep an eye on that leg, it may go away also.

Many years ago we lost one leg to the horse barn. Found it was caused by a nick in the insulation of the direct bury aluminum cable, water got in and the wire oxidized away to nothing.

Camping World has these.

On one of my projects many yrs ago an electrician cut a live 15kv cable. Don't assume they know it all, mistakes happen. Fortunately this guy lived.

I think he hired a pro and already knows what happened. Guessing somebody needed a new circuit and "re-arranged". My elderly MIL bought a house close to us not long ago...not that old but I guess the original owners were cheapskates...since the original build, the house added a "breezeway" and installed central air on that original tiny panel...that box is now a mess. When I built this house I buried a line to the shop on a 100a breaker from the house. No "re-arranging" on the house side there! On the shop side I have a 20 slot panel...will never get filled but I don't have to worry about what I do in the house.

One of my best friends has worked for the power company for 30+ years...at the time included building the "tower" stuff. He has a lot of stories to tell (still don't know squat about residential wiring though...go figure).

Here is his first post, I took it to mean that it had been working:

Went to use my table saw couple days ago, and no electricity on one side of my shop. Have two breakers and one main breaker; tripping the breaker didn't help. It's kind of strange, that only one half of the shop has no electricity...I'm no electrician, but it seems that maybe the breaker is bad? Can't imagine what would cause that; only thing that runs continually on that breaker is a clock and a telephone. Lightening cause something like this maybe?
