Get a plug in AC voltmeter and keep an eye on that leg, it may go away also.
Many years ago we lost one leg to the horse barn.Camping World has these.Found it was caused by a nick in the insulation of the direct bury aluminum cable, water got in and the wire oxidized away to nothing.

That's pretty much what he said he thought had happened. About 5 years ago the city put a sewer line across the back of my property, and the line was in place at the time. I watched when they located the line, and it seemed they were gentle enough with it, but who knows. I doubt that gophers dig 3 feet deep where the line is, but I suppose that's a possibility.
