I am..of course...assuming you speak of all warranty issues, since you state, "GM has a better warranty than Ford." You have not specifically mentioned powertrain warranty, but since this is our main discussion point for over 80 endless posts on this topic, I assume that is what you meant. Also, my dealer buddy says Ford will also expand to a 100,000 mile limit on its powertrain by year's end.

Ford warranty: 5/100K on diesel engine, 60K on balance of drivetrain.

GM warranty: 5/100K on diesel engine, 100K on balance of drivetrain.

That means that GM gives you 40,000 more miles on the transmission, t-case, rears, axles, etc.

In my little world, that's a BIG advantage for a GM truck owner.

There never was a 250K warranty, boss. In fact, Ford only very recently increased their driveline warranty (transm T-case, rears, etc) to 60K because GM announced 100K on their entire driveline (diesel engine, trans, tcase, rears, etc.) GM has a better warranty than Ford.

You'd be hard pressed to get a 250K warranty on even a heavy duty class 7 or class 8 truck.

My tranny on my Pete is either 200 or 250K and 5 yr. The motor which is Cat is a little different when it is used for recreational purposes, I think it is simular to the tranny warranty 5yr and or 200k...if commercial then it different. The Cat website has the warranty statment.
Everything on my Pete that is Pete was 12mo and everything else has it's own warranty period.... kinda like a house.
Like my seats (Bostrom) I needed a spring for the passenger seat that obviously was never there and they told me the seats were covered for 5 yrs and sent me more parts than I needed for free.

Maybe the premium trucks Like Pete, KW, but you get my point, most mediums don't offer much more than a 100K warranty. There's no way Powerstrokes have a 250K warranty.

Builder,

I am following you. You say GM has a better warranty, and they currently do, on the powertrain. My point is Ford has the better warranty on the body for corrosion, and they are the same bumper to bumper. I know you were speaking of powertrains, but to me you were stating the warranty en totale was better, which it is not. GM has some points as does Ford.

I can't verify that Ford has a longer corrosion warranty, but even if it did, I find corrosion warranties long expire before any rust appears on today's trucks.

I bet most buyers would rather have a 100K powertrain warranty over the Ford 60K powertrain warranty.

I do not concur with this. Where I live, we have enough snow that the roads are salted, especially in my neighborhood, pretty much all winter. I personally have seen two neighbors' have vehicles with significant frame corrosion in cars that are only two or three years old. If one lives in a high snow area (I do not--but we get more than expected for NC) having a good frame corrision policy is a good thing. I agree with you the GM powertrain warranty is better, but the frame warranty clearly is better from Ford. This was my point, in total, the warranties are similar--one favors one aspect, the other favors another. To me a frame warranty for corrosion is also valuable in these trucks because of the heavy strain they typically have placed on their frame. I do feel though Ford would be well-served to match GM's powertrain warranty. I am not sure why they do not, as the new engines and drivetrains have proven very reliable.

John,

I live in Wisconsin and can verify that salt induced corrosion is not an issue on Year 2000 and up GM products. I don't know if there are many states that use more salt than we do, so this is saying something. I recently replaced an aftermarket pre-filter on my duramax. The aluminum housing corroded enough to allow it to break in half. The powder coated mount was also rusted to beat heck. The frame and body of the truck (2003 model) still looks fine. A 2000 silverado 1500 and 2002 olds intrigue are also just fine. Just to be complete, my buddies V6 2000 ford F150 is also rustless. He does however get 4 mpg less on the highway and much much less when towing.

I'd rather have 100k on the power train than the 100K rust thru that it currently has. Just one voice from the northern land of salt and snow....

I think we'll find most owners would prefer it this way, too. A drivetrain component can go belly-up at any time. Frame corrosion is a long term process that for 90% of us, doesn't occur until long after any corrosion has occured.

Another thing: Corrosion warranties can be difficult. Most corrosion warranties are for corrosion through the metal in question, like a hole in the metal. That's a rare occurance on modern vehicles under 100K miles. However, there are discussion board forums FILLED with blown transmissions, rears and driveshafts that occured well within or shortly after a warranty period.

A blown transmission leaves a truck dead on the roadside and is usually very costly. Vehicles with corrosion can still be driven.

I would disagree that the warranties are similar. I give the edge to GM based on what items are given more warranty than Ford. Namely, the powertrain.

Excellent point...

I've got a 87 F350 Dump that has a little frame corrosion, but I definitely put more money in the drive train in its SHORT LIFE...:D
