Once as a salesman staying at a local motel I went with 'the boys' for some suds and found my car broken into upon retrieving it from the parking.
While driving back to the motel I spotted a police car hidden for traffic violations so I stopped and I guess a bit PO'd accused them of only looking for the easy crimes and not doing prevention work.
The exchange was fairly civil and ended up whereby I described the stolen goods.
At about 4 AM there was knocking on my motel door and lo and behold were the police (They said that I was in the most likely motel for sales reps) and sorry for the inconvienience but would I please come to the station and fill in a formal complaint as they cought the guys!
The young, under age guy had a carry bag with mine and other stolen goods, but the older guy had nothing of significance in his possession.
Well I identified my property OK except for a handfull of pens that I basically overlooked.
The police insisted that I look at the pens (cheap advertising giveaways).
Turned out that they were convention giveaways that I had collected the week prior. (and were in the 'leader's' pocket)
The crooks fessed up and next morning the police came to the motel dining room to advise me to please pick up my property as because of the confession they did not need the evidence.
Police told me the crook fessed up to some 36 B & E in the area and thereby closing 37 cases.
The police said that the 5 cent VERY positively identified pens provided the incentive for the extended interrogation that led to admission of guilt.
They also added that the perp was very well known but just too smart to catch until my 5 cent pens showed up in his pocket.
This occured in Sherbrooke Quebec some 25 years back.
