any rumors of Ms. requiring CDL for duallies?

cost, point issues for tickets, physicals, etc.. the list is huge why someone who is not commercial would not want a commercial drivers license.

do you want to go thru the process with the ATF, FBI and NFA to legally own a machine gun.. but.. not actually own one. IE.. just jump thru the hoops, back ground checks and finger prints just for the 'fun' of it? probably not.

I get all that, I really do.

I just see waaay too many guys opting for a dually and a gooseneck trailer, when a medium-duty, (at least), truck and trailer would be more appropriate for what they're hauling.

If people followed the current regulations that are already on the books, then proposals like this one, (if it's legit), probably wouldn't be......proposed. The simple truth is, that the temptation to use an inadequate-for-the-task truck/trailer combo originates with the notion that the rig isn't obviously commercial in appearance. It's plausible to onlookers that the operator isn't bending any rules when they don't have a CDL, or when they drive right by the weigh stations, or their vehicle never gets inspected.

With a proper towing rig, it's totally obvious that what we're looking at is a commercial vehicle.....and that's why many people opt out of using them.

Different states different rules.
Finally found a good link:

RV Driver's License Requirements lists some of the parameters.

Many states appear to have a non-commercial equivalent of class A or B.
But they seem to mix their letters like alphabet soup.

Bottom line for me seems neither VA or MS require anything special (yet).

Based on another thread I'm reviving this one.
Other thread:
louisiana just past a law last year if you have a dual wheel one ton and pull a trailer you must have a cdl no matter the wieght rating on the tractor. I know a man that got a ticket in his truck pulling a single axle bumper hitch trailer. They have not cracked down to hard yet but they was bad in texas. That is why i got a 3/4 ton when i bought in 09 and am looking for a big truck because if i have to have the cdl to drive the one ton i mine as wheel get a 18 wheeler for what i do.

Per Louisiana DMV web site:
Q. Who needs a CDL?

A. A CDL is required to operate the following:
Any vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
A vehicle pulling a trailer if the trailer has a (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.
A vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers including the driver.
A vehicle hauling hazardous materials in amounts required to be placarded.

NOTE: A vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in excess of 10,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds may require a Class D Chauffeur痴 license.

So looking at whodat526's post it seems there is a RUMOR afloat about duallies, not reflected in laws. However they also seem to be cracking down on trailers over 10K. Note the LA law doesn't mention " A CDL is required to operate the following if the vehicle is used for commercial use".

I knew over 26k needed a CDL, but have never heard that about the 10k+ trailers. There are A LOT of pickups (both srw and drw) carrying 10k+ trailers without a CDL. I have a CDL, but I never knew I needed it for a 3/4 ton pickup.

Again, for hire you do. If its personal affects not for hire you do not.

Also, RV's and such are exempt from the 26,001 rule as is most stuff with farm tags operated in state within 150 miles of the farm its registered.

Chris

they are trying to do away with the for hire part of you statement and make everyone that is running a dually have cdl's

Define for hire.

Is it pulling a skid steer to your job site?

or

Is it being hired to transport a skid steer to a job site (as in the transporting is your work rather than the grading)?

My understanding is both would be.
