Any Suggestions on a 80-95 hp Tractor?

I'm thinking about buying a used utility tractor (2wd), that could pull a 4 bottom plow. Looking at anything in the mid 80's to low 1990's. Could care less about color or brand, just so it has a reputation for reliability and low maintenance. I've looked at the International 1086's and 1066's but they are a bit bigger than what I need.

My neighbor has a JD 2640 (70hp pto), late 1970s vintage, that could handle a plow like yours. It's a 5000-lb tractor unweighted that produces about 58 drawbar horsepower at 5mph and 6500 lb max pull. I see them regularly on eBay selling for $8-10K.

Thanks for the good advice. I will have to do some checking on the 2640. There seem to be quite a few 1066's and 86's in this area still being worked hard by farmers.

I would also second what Art said, but I saw that you dismissed the 1066 in an earlier post. A 1066 is a bigger tractor than you need but will be easy on fuel. Older IHs are really hard to beat as a strong plow horse. Try checking out E & M Equipment just down the road from you in Port Royal...along Rt. 35, as I recall. They usually have some good-looking IHs.
I'd like to have a 1066 in my stable some day, but would prefer to have a 1206 first.

Thanks Junkie, I've been trying to remember the name of that place in Port Royal, they had advertised in the Lancaster Farming and the Tractor House magazine, but haven't seen any ads in the past six months or so. I would be more than happy with a 1066. Since I've started looking hard for a good utility tractor it's like a whole new world of tractor models and names.

I really like the CaseIH Maxxum, like the model 5130 or 5230. These tractors are available with a cab or open-station, 2WD or 4WD, with a handy shuttle-shift. The CDC engine (Cummins, really) is excellent in power and efficiency. The Maxxums are popular chore tractors in this area. A co-worker of mine owns one and really likes it.

Or how about a Deere 2950, 2955, or 3155? Perhaps a Ford 7710, but they are hard-to-find.

Where are you in PA? For me, the presence of a good dealer will determine my tractor color. In my area of PA, I'd run red. We have an unsurpassed CaseIH dealer: Hoober, Inc. They have superior service and parts support to others in my area.

Anyone have an "intimate" knowledge of the JD's 2840 and the 2940? I know the 2840 is the older brother, made until 79, then the 2940 was made for three years. From what I can read they had hydraulic problems with the 2840 and the first year 2940's but they are the size and the price range that I need. The 2950's are great looking tractors and supposedly very reliable but more than what I can afford. Thanks for any info.

I bought a new 2940 open station tractor in '82 to run a New Holland 851 round baler. Really good tractor, smooth 6 cylinder engine. Traded it after 2 years for a 2950 with a cab. I highly recommend getting a cab tractor if you plan on running a round baler. Both were very good tractors.
