The emphasis for me as far as tractors has always been with the compacts. Now that I'm looking for a utility tractor it really is like a whole different world. There are so many different tractor models, even within the JD lineup, that it's mind boggling. Again D7E I appreciate the recommendations.
I called about a 4240 this morning but it needed four new tires and that would have put the price beyond what I can afford to spend.

For various reasons, the price range and hp requirements fits a bunch of the Deere lineup for mid-'70's to mid/late-'80's. With that, you're looking at 30+ years old up to 20 years new. There are bunches and bunches of GOOD relatively low houred tractors in that group. There's some worn out, trashed, re-built 9 times from junk tractors still around too. Point is, there's good buys and there's run away as fast as you can types. The search is easier if you can expand the choices. You're more apt to luck on to a one-in-a-million good buy. A.) Don't limit choices to a Deere specifically. B.) Look at ALL models of Deere that fits the need. Look at ALL models of ALL brands.

Check around your area for any Deere 4230's. It's an upgraded version of the 4020. (SoundGaurd cab)

Ford 8000/8600's sell cheap. Good ones still around.

Allis Chalmers 180 (190XT!!!) Lower priced, decent tractor if not trashed.

IH, Most any model in the hp class you're looking for. LOTS of nice ones still floating around. '86 series sell WAY cheap for what sorta tractor they are IMHO. 986's sell too cheap usually.

Keep your eyes and ears open for models and brands that first appear to be out of the price range. Every now and then a bargain pops up.

Most of all, be patient. A good one'll come along.

I'm trying to learn as much as possible about all the brands in the hp size that I want, that's the reason I posted this question here, and I've got great advice. I am not going to rush into anything, the money that I will spend came to hard to waste it on a tractor that is trash.
Thanks FWJ for your good advice.

In most areas you are right but not here $6-8000 would be a more normal price for an auction for good ones ,2 years ago you could have paid $12-14000 ,Old stuff is not selling now ? Depends where you are ,A lot of british export steigers and versatiles and "classics" like 4020's and 5020's from manitoba because they are cheap here ?

I decided I wasn't going to rush into anything with the tractor but saw an ad for a 1066 and decided to take a look. It's owned by a Mennonite family, 3600 original hrs, rear tires have about 300 hrs and the fronts are new. Had a new clutch 100 hrs ago, relatively new fuel pump, new starter and batteries two years ago. Was repainted by the family and they did a decent job and has a new exhaust system. It was just serviced and had new oil filters and a new hydraulic filter. All the guages work, started right up and ran very smooth. The TA works but they said sometimes it shifts hard into low.
It was a bit bigger tractor than what I had originally been looking at but realized I could not afford a JD and the 1066's were very popular in this area. The duals in the back will be removed to haul it home and I probably will leave them off. Hope I made the right decision, I guess only time will tell.

Well, if you decide you don't want it, give me a call. I'll be glad to take it off your hands. That is the best looking tractor IH ever built. Looks aside, it is PROBABLY the best all around big tractor IH ever built. The 1066 has a sterling reputation. Unless you go with the largest implements that tractor can handle, you might not need the T/A much. Leave it in high and go to work! The aftermarket cab was just as good as the OEM cabs IH had at that time. By all indications, you got yourself one fine 125 hp tractor!

Thanks FWJ. I checked some old posts about the five most popular tractors that people had and the 1066 was mentioned numerous times. This is a 1973 model. Here is a pic from the other side.

Afternoon Oleozz,
As Bill stated allready that is one of IH's best right there !!!
Actually your gettin almost double the HP that you were lookin for but your probablly not going to need the TA anyways ! As you say take the duals off and move the inside tire out and youve got a spare set of tires and rims, unless compaction is an issue and then you may need the duals ! I would have to say you done good lad ! Congrats on a fine machine, any specific questions on that tractor just post on the YT Farmall board and youll get an answer in no time. One of my neighbors has one with the Elwood front assist !

Thanks Scotty.
Compaction should not be a problem in our fields.
I just finished reading the owners manual and many things seem easier to understand than what's in the Kioti manual!!!
What is the YT Farmall board?
