Thanks Jesse. I have one cab tractor, that being a 45 hp Kioti. The utility tractor will be used for plowing, discing, and general field work. I don't have plans to do any haying but that could change. Nice to hear from someone that had a 2940, hope to go look at one the end of this week.

My uncle had an early 2840, but he no longer farms and the tractor is long gone. My uncle would not have given an objective opinion, anyway. My uncle is solid green and, in my opinion, color-blind to the point of owning two, gasoline-powered 2010 Deere tractors...one of the worst Deere tractors ever!

For what it is worth, a friend who works at the previous-mentioned red dealership holds the Deere 2840, 2940, 2950, 2955 tractors in high esteem.

That's good to hear Junkie.
I drove to E&M equipment yesterday but the head man was not there and the help didn't know anything about the tractors or pricing! All were red, all big battleships, all but two had cabs. Most didn't seem in to bad of shape, at least no oil leaking on the ground and the filters had been recently changed. Some of the cabs were rough inside but that's not a big concern.

I currently have a '96 JD 6400 cab tractor that's 85hp. I bought it new and have had very few issues with it. Engine is a 4 cylinder w/turbo, 16 speed PowerQuad trans. Pulls a JD 535 round baler like it's not even there.

E&M has exhibited at Ag Progress Days a few years ago. Here is a photo of their handywork...

Anyone have an "intimate" knowledge of the JD's 2840 and the 2940? I know the 2840 is the older brother, made until 79, then the 2940 was made for three years. From what I can read they had hydraulic problems with the 2840 and the first year 2940's but they are the size and the price range that I need. The 2950's are great looking tractors and supposedly very reliable but more than what I can afford. Thanks for any info.

The 2840 had, among other issues, a propensity to snap in half. Engine to tranny connection was made with 6 bolts and 2 dowels holding everything together. The problem was worse with 2840's packing loaders, but I know of THREE non-loader equipped 2840's that simply broke in half under normal operation. 2940's addressed the issue. 2950's and 2955's are GREAT tractors.

If you can find one, I'd much rather have a 4040 or 4240 Deere than a 2840 or 2940. A lot stouter tractor for just a few bucks more.

Amazing what you can learn from this site. I really appreciate all the responses. I am not going to jump into anything just to have a tractor but now I am a bit wiser from all the info that has been given to me. Thanks.

2840 was manufactured in Mannheim starting in 1976...BIG 6 cylinder and was famous for leaks...

plus everything FwJ said...also...the 2150 to 2950s were from Mannheim, whereas the 4000s were from Waterloo...

Two problems that I think I'm going to have after doing some looking and shopping: Finding a good older tractor and finding one that fits into my budget. I plan on paying cash for this tractor so I am somewhat limited. The 4040's and 4240's are mostly in the $20,000 or up range, to much money for me at the present. The 29 series are what I can afford but now the key will be to find a decent one. Thanks again.

If youre looking at "heavy" tractors like a 4240 look at some ford TW's ,I see a lot of TW20's (145)pto making about $10-15000 the only issue to look for is water in the oil but it's rare on bigger fords ?
Don't be fooled by dealer prices ,farm auctions are nothing to be scared of (if you know your stuff)
I bought a beautiful ford 7600 with 5000 hrs $9000,MF390 cab, loader,FWA (1993) $8750 and last week i bought a nice 4020 for $4800 ?Look for fords in other dealers yards they always let them go cheaper ,And fords generally make less than greens and in most points the ford is better ,and this old stuff is not wanted on dealers lots and will take good "cash" offers ,I've looked at tractors that have sat on a lot for 2 years for $60'000 and take a $45'000 cash price ?
