Anybody bought a retired 6x6 deuce and a half?

Roy,
I see you mentioned going to AM General years ago. Was that the Hummer plant in Mishawaka? They also had the original AM General plant over in South Bend.

It was the South Bend plant, I believe.
I was (at the time) Quality Manager in an aluminum foundry. We were there on some quality issues...fortunately, not all ours.
The tour was a courtesy of our customer. It was pretty interesting.

That is a really clean NPR, I was impressed with it when you brought it by. As far as a Unimog 404, you don't have to lie down and let the feeling go away...I just put mine up for sale!

Sort of like the duece and a half, it is really slow on the road. Annoyingly so. Think of it as a fast tractor ripping along the road at 45 mph and it seems better.

Hi, Dave

I saw your Mog a few weeks ago when I dropped by your place. Nice unit.
I've only driven a 404 once, about 6 years ago, but my ears are still ringing and my kidneys still hurt from the rough ride:laughing:.

My son keeps needling me about getting one before I'm too old to climb into the driver's seat:).

The mog must be the most un-ergonomic rig ever built. Adds to it's charm.

I bought some stuff through Gov liquidation and while picking it up I had a chance to look at what else they were auctioning off. When I talked to the guy he said the government has a pecking order. When the current onner (army, navy, etc.) decides it doesn't need something it lets the other branches decide if they need it. Then they check with other government agencies. Next on the list is states agencies. Somewhere in there is the national guards. Then schools are offered the items. While doing work at a high school the head of the maintenance showed me a 35 year old Chevy 1 ton that had 5k miles and in perfect shape they just got. He was getting ready to have it fitted for a plow.

If nobody wants it then they let gov liquidation sell it off. A lot of times what they have is stuff that has had parts robbed off of them to keep other trucks running. I didn't see any 6x6 trucks. I would recommend going and looking at them before bidding.

One of the things I bought was some work platforms for lifting workers up to repair jet engines. About a year later I had to fill out a form saying that I needed to certify that I either destroyed them or send them back for a refund. Somethings require certifications saying you are an approved buyer and passed a background check. You also get charged state taxes.

I wouldn't say everything is bad or has no value. But there usually is a reason why they no longer need it.

Yup, That's how our town's highway dept ended up with 3 deuce and a halfs.
They are required to keep them for a certain number of years before they can sell them. In other words they can't just turn around and resell them, not sure if they get them for free or just a real cheap.

I bought one and my buddy bought the other 2 from our town, my brother bought those 2 from my buddy. still has them.

Roy, if you look at the link in the 1st thread, you will see that it is a '93 model. Really looks good.

I'm guessing it will go for $5-8K. Looks like 45mph is about what they like to do down the highway. Seems like it would make an excellent welding truck except for the bed being too high.

How about fabricating a scissor lift bed for a 6x6 deerblind?;)

It ended up selling for $6850. Pretty good deal for a clean one.
