Anybody here have any experience w/ Ford SD 6.0 PSD?

I thought the problems were all with the 2004's and the engines changed with the 05's? I have an 05 250 with the diesel (embarassed to say I'm not sure what the engine size and it's in for an inspection so I can't go check!). Anyway I bought it new, it has 27k on it with no problems at all. I had a dodge 2500 with the 5.9 liter gas and that was a piece of junk. (Not to start the big three war but I won't own another dodge. They look great but I had a lot of problems. Haven't tried gm yet but so far fords been pretty good to me).

I'm glad to hear that not every single person hates Ford diesels. As I mentioned, I have 3 years left on the factory powertrain warranty so I'm going to go ahead and roll the dice since I really do like the truck. I can get a Ford ESP warranty on the powertrain that would up my time to 5 more years and the mileage up to 200k for about $1300. That is almost tempting if I want to keep the Ford.

I quoted Gerard just because I wanted to make a small point. It's very well known that the Dodge Durango has not been a particularly reliable vehicle. But, believe it or not, I bought a brand new Durango in late '97 (their first year, a 1998 model) an kept it for 10 years and put over 150k trouble free miles on it. Go figure. I am generally really easy on my equipment and am a fanatic on maintenance. I attribute those charateristics to getting long term reliable service from vehicles that are considered unreliable.

Dargo, if you are going to keep the sic point oh-no ! I would go for the extended warrenty. I had the choice of the 7.3 0r 6.0 on 2003 on a F-450 . Went for the latest and greatest 6.0 oh well, still have it running but always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I looked at the Cummins 6.7 pretty close last year ,loved the engine brake and some of the other upgrades but was scared off by the DPF and milage, now glad I stayed with my '99 5.9. Have looked at turning in the 94 7.3 IDI turbo but that is part of the family now, doesn't get much simpler either. Hard to believe that diesel was $.96/gal when I got it ! Ford is set to come out with a new gasser in a year or two, the Boss, may just look at that after a year or two, let them get the bugs out. Between the cost of the diesel engine and the cost af fuel and lower mileage I hate to say I might be done with diesel pickups. Got a new F-450 this year and went with the V-10 gasser, Just used as a 'brush truck' at the fire station but didn't want to be the guina pig on the 6.4. Good luck.

I have a 07 powerstroke, f250 crewcab 4x4 with 40,000 miles and have had 0 problems. never been back to dealer for motor, went once when I needed the 4x4 switch in dash replaced. I tow heavy 12-15,000 pound loads quite often, I am a firechief, so I crank cold engine and will run a 100mph then let it idle at the scene. I honestly believe that if you baby these motors its worse for them then if you work them. most turbo stuck issues are from letting truck sit and not run for weeks at atime. I have had a durramax, and had a dodge gas once. could not imagine justifying to my self a great cummins wrapped in a dodge.

I operated most 300,000 miles.Only bought two transmissions on my 1996 7.3, my fault plowed and towed constantly, retired that one at 386.000 miles no engine trouble. Replaced that one with a 2001 7.3 no tranny or engine work other than a warranty computer, retired it at 230,000 short bed wasn't working out as needed. Replaced that one with new 6.0 first generation 2002 turbo failure occured under warranty and has been fine on that truck since, still running that f350 in addition to my 04 6.0 excursion which has also been trouble free at 91000 miles. Mpg has varied tremendiously 4:10 rears produced 11mpg 3:73 21 mpg plus. I will continue to buy ford diesels. Not saying there isn't anything better just my experience. Above statement about plowing and towing was extreme use for that size of truck. they are not meant for 10 foot fabbed snow plows or dragging 21000 pounds regularly. My f450 is a 7.3 manual 6 speed and is the worst truck in my fleet, geared wrong 4wd is ignorrant to operate and the doors started to rust at 40,000 miles.

You could run the fords to that mileage as well but the salt eats the sheetmetal away first here in PA.

I'm told 600,000 before they need a valve job . The only thing they need is an Alloy block with cast iron liners to get them down from 399kg(dry) to stop the truck plowing into corners .

Neither Ford or Dodge make their own diesel for their pickups.

GM is the only one making their own diesel from an Isuzu/GM joint venture called "DMAX Ltd."

A little antecdote related to this thread. Brought my 250 6.0 liter turbo diesel in for an inspection and told them to change the fuel filters while they had it. I had done the filters myself on my back and it wasn't hard or cumbersome but without a lift I did get a bunch of diesel running down my arm so I figured I'd pay a couple of bucks to have it done. They called me with a quote for $282 dollars. $105 for parts and 1.5 hours book labor. I can do it myself for $55. Any mechanics out there care to comment? Just seemed a little excessive to me - mainly on the book rate. I'm not a mechanic and can do this on my back in less than 30 minutes. 1.5 hours seems pretty high along with almost double the parts cost.
