A little antecdote related to this thread. Brought my 250 6.0 liter turbo diesel in for an inspection and told them to change the fuel filters while they had it. I had done the filters myself on my back and it wasn't hard or cumbersome but without a lift I did get a bunch of diesel running down my arm so I figured I'd pay a couple of bucks to have it done. They called me with a quote for $282 dollars. $105 for parts and 1.5 hours book labor. I can do it myself for $55. Any mechanics out there care to comment? Just seemed a little excessive to me - mainly on the book rate. I'm not a mechanic and can do this on my back in less than 30 minutes. 1.5 hours seems pretty high along with almost double the parts cost.

Find another garage and stay away from the big commercialized-looking ones.

I found a motor pool mechanic that does work on the side for amazingly reasonable rates. He would do my fuel filters for parts plus maybe $35-40 bucks. Takes him all of 30 minutes, so he's happy with making $70-80/hr.

Neither Ford or Dodge make their own diesel for their pickups.

GM is the only one making their own diesel from an Isuzu/GM joint venture called "DMAX Ltd."

Well aware, couldn't care less, the emblem on the front says Ford, it goes when I put it in gear gives me no trouble. That I care about. I don't own stock in any of them just know what I like. I'm glad you like your GM products.

You just wouldn't believe how many guys I run into actually think Ford builds their own diesel for the Superduty....

That's probably going to be the case with the 6.7 if Ford and Navistar go their separate ways.

Don't want to sabotage the thread, but on the note of the 6.0 fuel filters: STAY AWAY FROM THAT DEALER! It is an incredibly simple job to do... can do in 15mins...

Well......I took it to the Ford dealer today. I was rather surprised to have an email when I got home from the dealer with a link to allow me to follow the R/O ticket online. I'd never heard of that before. Even though my 'check engine' light had gone off this morning when I was leaving to take it to the dealer (figures!), they were still able to pull the codes that were tripped. The service manager tells me that the new Fords leave the 'check engine' light on for 3 driving cycles if the ECM detects a "non-critical" problem and then it goes off. For a problem that must be addressed it stays on all the time. If the problem is critical and could result in serious damage the light flashes constantly and has some accompanying sound.

Anyway, since I am friends with the service manager he said he ran every diagnostic check, both electronically and physically checking, that he could. It has some sensor that is bad that causes the surging issue, the radiator fan clutch is bad and the oil leak is some seal behind the starter motor. I'd already changed both fuel filters, the one inside the frame rail under the driver's seat and the one next to the oil filter, myself. Otherwise, he said all seems fine. The correct gasket/seal had to be ordered and I'm supposed to get the truck back on Thursday. Hopefully (fingers and toes crossed) that fixes everything and it runs well then.

Anybody else ever had a service department send you an email link to be able to monitor your repair online? I think I like that.

I am not the norm but I love the 6.0L. I have 2, a 2004 F-250 and a 2006 F-350 along with a 1999 7.3L and they have all been great trucks which each drive about 12-15K per year. All three are 4x4's with automatics and 3.73 gears. I work the **** out of all of them in my marine business and the 6.0L F-350 is called upon to do the heavy towing, as much as 25,000# with no complaints. All three trucks have chips, exhaust, and intakes. I have not turned a wrench on any of the trucks period except for routine maintenance. Both of my 6.0L have turned out over 17mpg during the life of the vehicles and will turn out 23-24mpg on the highway unloaded. My only complaint is the fuel tank size. All have 29 gallon tanks and form my business I would like more but do not want to give up the bed for a tank in the back.

Follow the link the The Diesel Stop posted earlier. Lots of good info on the site for Fords.

When the 6.0's came out it was a real mess. Lots of complaints. You might be able to find solutions to your problems at the website.

I have not read up on the 6.4 engines since the end of last year. I don't remember reliablity problems but the milage seemed to have dropped 5mpg or so. My 2002 has the 7.3 and I'll be keeping it for many years. Only the CPS has had to be changed which is a well known issue for which I keep a spare in the glove box was well as the required tools to fix. The hydraulic clutch assest failed at 100K. My old Chevy failed three times in 70K. I bought the Chevy to last a decade or more. Did not happen. The Ford 7.3 is going to last awhile.

Unless the MPG goes up on these new emission castrated engines this might be my last diesel truck.

Later,
Dan
