I have a 2005 F350 4x4 with the 6.0 PSD and for the first 30,000 I had trouble with the turbo, sensors and re-flashing the computer. But since then everything has been good. Empty I get around 15 mpg. This week I tried driving slower and taking off slower and averaged a little over 19 mpg. Aside from the engine trouble that I had I love the truck. The interior, the brakes, tow command, ride, and looks are great. Now with over 63,000 miles on it I've decided to keep it as long as possible.

Follow the link the The Diesel Stop posted earlier. Lots of good info on the site for Fords.

When the 6.0's came out it was a real mess. Lots of complaints. You might be able to find solutions to your problems at the website.

I have not read up on the 6.4 engines since the end of last year. I don't remember reliablity problems but the milage seemed to have dropped 5mpg or so. My 2002 has the 7.3 and I'll be keeping it for many years. Only the CPS has had to be changed which is a well known issue for which I keep a spare in the glove box was well as the required tools to fix. The hydraulic clutch assest failed at 100K. My old Chevy failed three times in 70K. I bought the Chevy to last a decade or more. Did not happen. The Ford 7.3 is going to last awhile.

Unless the MPG goes up on these new emission castrated engines this might be my last diesel truck.

Later,
Dan

Not picking on you, but I find it amusing as to why truck owners can't understand why the fuel mileage on them keeps going down as the newer models are introduced. The power keeps going up. More power requires more fuel. Add to that the DPF and you get the idea.

If you want a diesel that sips fuel, buy an older 5.9L Cummins rated at under 250HP and you'll get fantastic fuel mileage.

The big 3 desperately need to offer a 2nd diesel option that's de-tuned to about 250HP that gets ~20MPG as an option for fleets and the fuel concious.

I agree for the most part, however with technology being where it is today, why can`t the oems offer multiple ecm programs that can be switched on the fly, say 300 hp and 565 lb ft. economy and 365 hp and 700 lb ft on power mode. If relatively small companies such as edge and bullydog can figure out how to manipulate factory electronics to do this, Surely the big 3 or their respective engine suppliers could figure it out with a clean sheet of design paper. I would be willing to bet that most prospective buyers would not be turned off by such a feature and would be willing to pay a few hundred bucks more for it.

My old '96 Cummins originally only had 160 hp from the factory. For what I tow, that was a bit anemic. Granted, I did go a bit overboard in improving that number, but it is fun to drive. :D

Chances are they have just not thought about it. Just like the integrated brake controller. But once one does everyone will follow suit.

I believe that has been done in the past with the 4/6/8 cadillacs of the first fuel crisis. Now several vehicles inow use similar "valve closing" technology to increase MPG.

GMC offers 2 different outputs on the 4500/5500 (300/360HP 600/660TQ), but you must pick which level when the truck is built. Once built, it cannot be (easily) changed.

I believe the reason they don't offer a switchable mode is because the average idiot will switch modes from low to high when the truck is struggling with a huge load on a hill and snap something in the drivetrain from the sudden increase in TQ.

You or I would know how to handle it, but you must remember the bottom of the barrel idiots drive them, too.

I was speaking more in terms of fuel curves rather than multi displacement arrangements. my 03 dmax lb07 with edge box allows me 5 levels of power, all dependent opon fuel enrichment and timing curves,. I think the OEMs should incorperate this technology into the new diesels to give us both the high power ratings of the current diesels with the economy potential of the diesels of 03 and older. I whole heartedly agree with you Builder about the damage potential of idiots as the term idiot proof is realy an oxymoron, however they could be made idiot resistant by only allowing hp changes with the key on and engine off or on a running engine in gear only when the throttle position reaches 5% or lower.

Most large trucks have 2 settings , a higher horsepower level when the cruise control is set ie. 460hp normal or 500hp on cruise . This could easily be done to any Diesel with an ECM and cruise control .

I have a 05 F350 Dually with the 6.0 so far with about 44000 on it no real problems other than one turbo replacment at about 35000 miles. the mechanic said the vanes had gummed up. Was told the best way to aviod this was to work the truck hard every so often and it would keep the turbo freed up. Love the ride and pulling power. Like some of the other posters fuel milages are going to keep going down with the new epa requirments.

I have a 2007 F250 6.0. Have about 30,000 miles on it with no problems other than the rear sliding window. You may want to check out the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum. Lots of very helpful and knowledgeable people. May be able to help you with questions.
