Anybody here shipped a tractor before?

canoetrpr, maybe if you told everyone where the tractor is and where you are there might be somebody here that is going that way?

Provide a little more detail and maybe someone can help you out. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've been looking into having a tractor shipped also. I've been told a rough estimate of the cost is in the neighborhood of $1.00 per loaded mile. This is for a JD 4720.

At that rate, and considering the distance to that dealer, it takes a huge bite out of the savings over buying locally. My difference, however, is less than half of the $8,000 you'd be saving.

We have had customers rent a roll back wrecker to load or unload a tractor without a ramp. You can drive onto the wrecker and then just lower to bed. Otherwise you need access to a ramp if it is a running / driving machine. Some people rent forklifts to load or unload tractors in a crate. Just make sure to get a forklift rated for more than the container you want to unload. Hope this helps.

Hey Kevin:

Thats a darn good idea.

The machine I am currently looking at is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am just north of Toronto, Ontario. The tractor is a Kubota B7800.

There are a few other machines that also look interesting if this one does not work out - one located in Washington, Indiana.

I re-ran my numbers and if I paid the guy what he was asking for the 7800 it would work out to $6000 not $8000 cd before shipping.

I'd really much prefer to buy locally to support the local Kubota dealer but if after shipping the difference is still several thousand then I'll consider whether the warranty on a new machine is really worthwhile.

When my John Deere 50 was shipped...I built a makeshift ramp out of my woodpile. Took and hour or so to rearrange the wood, but it worked great.

If no woodpile, construct a temporary one out of 2 x 6's. You might want to use decking screws to bind it together; then unscrew them after you unload.

Note: Had to have a cashier's check in hand before I was allowed to unload it.

Hi,

You could try calling any of the ebay auctions and find out who the shipper is that they use. McGrew is one of the big ones for auctions.
Call any of the tractor companies advertising on the net and ask who they use to ship.
Call shipping companies and ask about car hauling between the U.S and Canada. Lot of places do it.
Call one of the big towing companies and they will give you a price. Long distance towing is also always an option for one of the gypsy tow truck drivers( lots of those hanging around the hwys in Toronto ). After all, $500-$1000 for a days worth of work should be worth it to them.
Ask one of the people on this site ( who are dealers ) who they use and what the costs run. You could send them a PM and I am sure they would help. Lots of dealers on the list that may be willing to share information.
Commercial car haulers will probably run about $1000 USD.

Challenge but can be very financially rewarding.

Later.

A couple of questions.
Do you own a pickup truck or Van?
Do you have the time to drive to Cincinnati, Ohio?
If you answer yes to both of these. Then rent a U-haul car hauler trailer.
I tow my B2910 (same size as a B7800) with a Chevy Astro Van. It would be a 10 hour drive from Toronto.

Is the seller going to provide export papers?

I've delivered implements and some tractors to JD, MF, Kubota, NH, and Kioti dealers just to name some. We even had a 5000 series JD driven out of a trailer and delivered. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have you tried LTL companys? LTL means (less than a load) if you did not know. Some LTL companys are: Yellow, Roadway, Holland, Overnite, Con-way (CCX), and Fed-ex,,,, just to give you some idea's. I work for one of the above mentioned company's and if you were interested in going with one of the above, I can give you some idea's.

Good luck, RedDog

Thanks for continuing with the ideas folks.

The best bet I have found yet is contacting brokers that import new and used cars from the U.S. to Canada. They are going to get back to me with a price for the whole deal - shipping / clearing customs and all.

Adding up the numbers I suspect tht that it is not going to be viable unless I pick it up myself with a friend. I'd be worried about going with someone that had the ability to tow for insurance, liability - can I trust them purposes. If shipping clearing customs costs me $3000 or more then I've got to start thinking about whether saving $3000k is worth a two year old machine with no warranty and the risk that something could go wrong on the way or that I could be defrauded in anyway.

I have friends with pickup trucks but I'd have to find a car hauler to rent. I'll check with U HAUL. Any other ideas who I could rent one from?

Reddog - very interested in hearing from you to get some idea of what it would cost for LTL and if something like this could be arranged with an LTL company.
