Anyone ever do any magnet fishing?

I do this off my dock whenever I drop a tool in the water. So far I have recovered my own hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, and a framing square. Wasn't able to recover a putty knife I lost -- I figure the tide carried that one away. But I did find a bunch of long 1/2" bolts that the dock builder must have lost. I've been so focused on finding my own tools I never thought about other people's stuff.

Make sure those magnetic rocks aren't meteorites before you toss them back. They can be worth a little cash. ;)

Meteorite Home Tests

Nice find on the big magnet. Go fishing with little magnets and come home with bigger magnets.... sounds just like fishing with minnows for bait.
Hey, even a dumb guy like me can learn something new.

When I was a kid we magnet fished in the farm pond. My dad found the boat anchor he'd lost. We pulled the magnet around in dry dirt, too. The main thing I remember us finding there were little specks of black power that were difficult to remove from the magnet. I don't understand why the specks were black instead of red like rust.

I'm fighting myself to keep from telling about the time our magnet brought up a mess of steelhead.:)

Don't. Then I won't tell about the time we telephoned all those fish and they came to the surface to answer.

It's probably magnetite.

Or the time we threw hundred of steel BBs in the water for chum. The fish swallowed them thinking they were salmon eggs and we caught the whole school of fish with a magnet.

It's probably magnetite.

To delv a bit deeper, for example, all along Lake Michigan, pretty much everywhere, you can walk the beaches and you'll see small areas of black sand mixed into the white sand, like this picture.

from this article....

'Black sand' on Lake Michigan shore is not just mud

Back in the 60's, by dad would scoop up a small bucket of it and we'd bring it home and let it dry out.

Once it was dry, we'd take a couple spoonfuls of it and dump it on a piece of newspaper. Then we'd run a magnet under the newspaper, swish the magnet around, and draw it out to the side of the pile of sand. Out would come a bunch of black, fuzzy particle. Magnetite. It was vey similar to the stuff you'd see in those little magnetic beard toys. We'd drive it over towards the edge of the paper, remove the magnet, and dump the magnetite into a film bottle or jar for later projects.

You should go to Oak Island. They are desperate enough to come up with anything to have a show that they will probably put you on, and then recap it for the next year if you find anything.
