Anyone ever do any magnet fishing?

You should go to Oak Island. They are desperate enough to come up with anything to have a show that they will probably put you on, and then recap it for the next year if you find anything.

No kidding! I gave up on that show after about season 2. My mother in law still watches it. Every once in a while, I ask her if they found anything yet. Even she says "No, and I don't know why I keep watching it."

MossRoad,
Thank you. I was about to say the black particles seemed to be the same stuff that accumulates on the tiny sand bars in drainages after a rain. I'm told that the red in red clay comes from rust. Evidently magnetite has some component that keeps it from rusting.

Oak Island has fascinated me since I read about it in a magazine. I can't help wonder why someone would go to so much trouble to bury a treasure and then leave a pulley dangling from a tree directly over it.

my son and his friends have done it (17-20 year olds) in the local river off the docks.

Learning curve..they've hooked stuff they can't pull back in..have lost a magnet or 2..

I've used corroseal and rustoleum rust converter this past summer to treat rust on a vehicle and implements. says it converts the rust to magnetite, and it will never rust again. Still waiting to see how true that is.

I wondered about that. It seems to me side pull and sliding off as has been mentioned would not always possible.

I know for a fact it doesn't work with stainless steelhead.

All I can say, is that the stainless steel was of a high quality; not the stuff that covers my dish washer, microwave and kitchen range.

Myself and friends have Dropped many things over the years at local boat docks. Tools, glasses, knives, accessories made of stainless steel which are non magnetic . Using a big magnet on a string has pretty much been useless. But you never know what’s down there.
Good luck

Grenade ends up at Taco Bell after Florida fisherman discovers it - CNN

While using a magnet to search water for salvage items, the fisherman pulled up a World War II hand grenade, according to police in Ocala, Florida, about 80 miles northwest of Orlando.

The fisherman threw the grenade in his trunk and drove to a Taco Bell, where he called police. The Taco Bell was evacuated, police said, but was reopened later that day.
