Take it off and have it rebuilt. Cheaper and comes back correct.

I have it off, no markings on it. I called a local rebuild place, but they were talking $150 to rebuild. I'd like to shop around to see if I can get one off Amazon as an alternative.

Soundguy will know and can tell you the cheapest route to go. He will be around sooner or later- google it and see what comes up.

I have been Googling....lots of part numbers out there, most cryptic. I'll wait for Soundguy to chime in with suggestions.

OEM number is D7NN11001A for a new starter. New Holland dealers can stock and sell D7NN11001AR which is remanufactured. A very popular new aftermarket starter part number is 1100-0112.

Well, since I have an ear, I might have been too assuming that it was my starter. Just assumed it was...but, I do need to go and have it tested.....Let me describe what's actually happening...Tractor is 45 years old. Owned by the same family for 43 years before I bought it, and I know the owners. It's the original starter.

9 times out of 10, when I hit the starter, there is a loud crack (sounds like metal on metal), and then I hear the freespin of the starter gear. Finally, on the roughly 10th time, the starter gear will engage the flywheel and turn the tractor over. Happens like this everytime I go to start it.

When I removed the starter, I didn't notice anything wrong with the flywheel like bent teeth or chipped teeth that would be a problem, nor did I notice anything on the starter gear...........again, assumed it was a starter? Is the described problem indicative of a starter going bad?

Yes. There may also be ring gear damage, but that would require a split to replace. Best time to do that is when you are prepared to/need to do clutch work. Step one is to replace the starter or have it overhauled by a local starter/alternator shop if you have a decent one. Some aren't.

Thanks Rick - I'll start with the easy stuff first! Would an auto parts store be able to appropriately test the starter to determine if it's good/bad given the symptoms described?

Update: I took the starter to a NAPA auto parts store to get checked. The guy seemed quite knowledgeable about starters. Actually called out the starter without me telling him what it was off of.

He hooked it up and gave it power and Starter gear pushed out and spun like a bandit.

He said it all tested good, albeit retracted a little slow - he said to clean it up, it works fine.

The problem of course, is that I expected him to tell me it was bad, and I could just buy a new starter with confidence that it would fix my issue.

Now, not sure at all. Thoughts?

The issue you described is a indication that the starter drive is failing(most likely).
There is a clutch in the gear end of the starter that slips, A bench test as done by the auto parts guy will not indicate the failure.
A rebuild generally includes a new drive.

Excellent - back on track then - a new starter it is. Thanks for letting me know !

The solenoid is on top of the starter. It's a slanted down rectangle looking one

shock good morning the picture you posted does it match your starter if so you are lucky most parts stores sale this for less than $40.00 as general rule. now a little more info if picture matches what you see on top is not a solenoid but it is a hammer drive as ford called it for engaging starter drive the solenoid in most cases in in the dash area and also can be bought very good price also this starter has only 1 wire going to a post in side of starter or a tab with screw hole in rear housing let us know if this makes sense
