Today is the day that Union Pacific runs an old steam engine from Denver to Cheyenne.

So I chased it and got to see a very neat sight. Some pics are in order!!

BTW It is a Northern 844. These could do upwards of about 100mph. In the distance pic it is doing about 71mph. The whistle is awesome!!

That was great! Fine pictures too! Thank you!

For us Easterners, there's the Strausburg Railroad just south of Lancaster, PA. It's a very enjoyable day trip!

Thank you for the pictures.:D :D

In my youth all the locomotives were steam. :) :D And yes, we did put pennies on the track to flatten them.:D

When I was a kid, there was a place in Bellows Falls, VT that had steam engines on display. Long gone now, I think they left 30 years ago.

I took the wife and kids on our only train ride back in '93. We rode the UP Challenger (3965?) from Kansas City to Jefferson City, MO. So we can say we rode on a steam train. Somewere I have some neat pictures of the engine taken while we were rounding a curve.

We were really impressed by the luxury of the old-time passenger cars. The leg room was unreal.

SWEET!!
That is the other train that runs this route. We also went and looked at the BIG BOY (largest steam engine) at the Forney Museum here in Denver as well.

More pics!!:D

I will admit this is me. I R a Ingineeer 4 a day. I have more soot in my lungs than on my face.

History: My Dad worked on the NY Central. His Dad was an engineer on the NY Central and killed when his locomotive suffered a boiler explosion.

This the "famous" Pere Marquette 1225. (converted to oil burner). Ran a trip from Durand to Owosso? as I recall in 1999. Never seen so many grown men shake at the fury of the steam drivers bouncing at road speed. They still cook her out when they can affort the insurance and track rental.

Yes, great pics. We've ridden the Durango to Silverton train a couple of times, and the train from Rusk to Palestine (in Texas). The pic in my profile is of the train from Durango with my wife and I standing in front.

There's also the trains in Ely, Nevada. They will take excursions, or you can get1-day or 2-day classes, and learn how to drive them. Then, they take you out on the track and let you "Engineer". Last I looked was something like $500

My Grandfather was an engineer for C&O railroad going from steam to diesel in the 50's, he retired in the 70's after more then 40 years of service. I wouldn't be surprised if he drove the 1225 because he all ways talked about the old Pere Marquette lines and did a lot of lay-overs in Chicago.
