Anyone priced a Model 94 Winchester lately?

Agreed. Its a heavy rifle but beautifully made. I haven't shot it in years. I also have a much newer 94 I think I bought it in 1995 or so. Its in 30-30. I believe I paid about 250.00 new. Its nowhere near as solid or pretty as the old one but its brought down many a deer.

IIRC, I bought a new 94 in 1991 for $208....at Wally-World

First shot at a deer was a 10 point buck the first 20 minutes of deer season:thumbsup:

That's the way to put to use. I haven't had a deer yet that walks away from a 30-30.

I think we will see a resurrection of the 30-30 cal. With the new bullets and powders the performance has improved. As most know it always was a fine deer cartridge.I like lever guns myself and have a .444 Marlin. The newest aren't the same as they were just a few years ago.I believe they got bought out and merged.

The new Hornady ammo makes the 30-30 shine. Otherwise, the 30-30 has always been a pretty low power rifle round.

The flipside is, it does prove you do not need the latest Binford 2000 Super Mag to hunt deer at 100 yards.

That said, Savage definitley out classed the 30-30 by 1915 with the 250-3000 Savage and the 300 Savage in 1920. It's too bad Savage dropped the 99 lineup...

I don't think there's a lot available in lever-action rifles with "modern" cartridges, aside from the Browning BLR and the Marlins. The Winchester offerings of just a few years ago, like the 375 big-bore 94, and I think they offered it with the 307 as well?? seem to have disappeared from their line-up. Whether that's the Browning influence or not, I don't know, but since Browning offers the BLR, that might be a reason for them going by the way.

The Savage was a fine gun, I often wished I had one but the opportunity never presented itself. I think it was available also in 257 Roberts and 308 Win to name a couple.

Ain't that the sad truth.. I had someone mention to me yesterday that they thought the 308 wasn't enough gun for moose. If I ever see a moose that a properly placed 308 round won't kill very quickly, I'm moving to the Caribbean! Wanting the magnum calibers is always something I haven't understood, aside from dangerous game or extreme distance shooting.

Having an animal that's relaxed when the first bullet hits it, and one that's hyped on adrenaline is two very different things. I've seen deer run a long way with their heart and lungs shot away, and also seen them collapse in their tracks at the first shot.
