I'm looking for a good used plow and I stumbled upon this one on Craig'slist. I've looked at a few different new ones and this one looks unique. ...but I don't know if it's good or bad unique. Anyone know what kind it is? It appears to have a a blade that sits flat on the concrete. The seller thinks it weighs well over 100lbs. Is it worth the $75 asking price? ...and would I have any trouble pulling it with my 28hp? This would be my first plow so I need to get it right.

Pulling with your 28 hp will work, depending on how deep you go, what the soil is like, what your tractor tires are like, what your weight is, and what the adjustment is on the 3 ph.

All of the above will be one of several variables to deal with, and will depend on how satisfactory the middle buster plow is for you. To me, worth $75. Looks better built than the new ones called "middle busters".

beenthere hit the nail on the head the 4x4 will help but really depends on your dirt if its got alot of clay in it might wanna wait to plow after a small rain to soften the dirt or youll be popping weelies trying to sink that in the ground i only recommend that because ive done it other than that looks like a really nice plow and a few times in the dirt itll be shiny new

I may be wrong but that looks like a middle buster or some people call them potato plows. Not a breaking plow as I know them.

my soil is actually very sandy... I hear it's pretty tough to plow, like clay...my box blade chisels seem to do ok in it, my FEL provides some extra weight. I think I'm going to go take a look at it

yeah for the 75 dollar price if you see it wont do what you want you want it to you can always sell it for what you paid id try it

I think that is a modified Potato plow or middle buster. If it was a plow the hitch pins would be offset 3-4 inches from left to right and they look even in the picture. High enough for a used middle buster? Ken Sweet

I agree with Mr. Ken !
Also no front protruding beam to mount coulter wheel assembly if someone wanted too.

This is one substantial implement. If it does the job I think I got a heck of a deal. I'm no middle buster expert but this is more like a middle annihilator! Check out the pic showing underneath the bottom. The seller wasn't really sure what the brand was but he guessed it to be about 50 years old. I'll report back once I've had a chance to see how it pulls.

Mystery solved, I found engraved on the bottom "IH LISTER 22"

I didn't know what a "Lister" was till I googled it, evidently they're used with a planter.

That really looks nice. How hard does she pull? Ken Sweet
For the most part smooth as a hot knife through butter...and that's at speed 1-3, at 1-1 it was just too slow. A few times I found it trying to go too deep so I might need to adjust my toplink. I hit a few spots where the clay was dense and I noticed when I was done there was a clay buildup on the upper portion that was preventing the turning over of the soil. I'll have to watch that closer next time and scrap it off as I go.

Sounds Great, As the plow "Scours" off it may eventually not stick. Always grease the plow surfaces between plowing. Ken Sweet

The point doesn't look very sharp. You may have a problem getting it to go into the ground. Maybe not. Let us know how it works.

I used sandpaper and my drimmel tool to take the top layer of rust off the foot part of the blade, I was able to sharpen it a bit too. See pics above for my first time with it in the ground. Overall, I think it's going to work out perfectly...especially when the upper portion gets "scoured off" as Sweettractors mentioned.

You realize if you pull it in the ground enough that metal wil become shiny and new looking! Unless your talking about the frame or something.

Yeah, I know ... I had a bit of time on my hands and since I live an hour away from my tractor I thought I'd give it a head start :p, I did use the sandpaper on the rest of it to paint it at some point and the drimmel didn't do a bad job of sharpening the edge. Looks like the moldboard will take longer though. I felt kind of silly making such a fuss about an old plow, but hey, I'm easily entertained.
