Hi I bought an older 5' shredder and it shook a bit but I thought the blades might be out of balance, but later found the stump jumper had been bent about 1/4-1/2". So was wobbling. After finally getting it off I had damaged the oil seal on the bottom. So started disassembling it, to replace the seals. (I had the bottom really hot a couple of times) But now my problem is. The input shaft has a flat plate on it covering the seal and it looks like a couple of fine threads on the outside but no pin holes to remove the plate around covering it. The output gear shaft has no locks or keepers visible. Has anyone had one of these before. I cannot find a brand or name on either one. Yes a know the old fill it with grease trick but I would prefer to have the seals in tack. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to TBN!

I can't see a plate over the seal, but you could probably pry it out.

Thanks for the reply, I have attached better pictures of the input shaft. (The cuts on the edge are from cutting the spacer off the stump jumper) Only way I can see to pry cover off would be to drill a hole in it and put a screw in it??

That would be the best way to remove the shield washer and the seal.

You might think about assembling a spacer to rest on the ridge around the splined output shaft and use the threaded nut to pull the shaft, seal and bearing out.

The "plate" is a shield to help protect the seal. It's a throw away item to be replaced once removed. Just poke a hole in it and pry it out. Also, don't try to pull the shaft out the bottom. It doesn't come out that way. If you were successful at that you would be looking for another gearbox.

Is that maybe a snap ring holding the plate in? In the second photo it looks a little like a break in the "ring" in the upper right.
