We used a similar unit that was towed by a tractor at higher speed. It was called a Rotary Hoe.
8' wide I think.

Roundup ready corn seed put most rolling cultivators in the bushes down in these parts, I sold a 4 row set that I had but kept my 2 row set for gardening, as someone else said once you have them adjusted properly let the hide go with the hair and don't look back till you get to the other end.

Hey all, hoping someone on here will have seen this before and know how/what it's used for. I found this around the barn. My FIL used to have a super A, 140 and years ago a JD 4010 I think it was.

I am hoping it is used to clear weeds out of the rows.

Also if someone has used this before do you mount it with the spurs pointing out? How deep does it run? Surface or all the way down?

It has a 1" shank so I could mount them on my cultivator mount.
Looks like a segment from a Lilliston rolling cultivator, used for cultivation and weed removal of row crops in California. There are righthand and lefthand units, can't see this good enough to tell which.

Anybody else hearing that Trisha Yearwood song?

"You was just another hayseed plowboy, who didn't have a rotor-hoe"

I've been there not a row to hoe and no rotor-hoe. :)

Sounds like you're describing a type of cultivator or row crop weeder attachment. If it has spurs or spider wheels, it's likely used for shallow cultivation to break crust and control weeds between rows. Yes, usually the spurs face outward to cover more ground. As for depth, it generally runs just below the surface—deep enough to disturb weeds but not damage roots. Mounting it on a 1" shank cultivator should work fine if it lines up with your row spacing.
