I only put the 250lb of wheel weight on to help with traction when using a front blade or front blower. When using the FEL (or forks), I put another 900lb weight on the 3-pt.
In general, I would think that you would want to add approximately 1/2 of your loader rating to the rear of the tractor. For example, if the loader is rated for 2500 lbs, you would want to put about 1000 to 1500 on the back in some combination of the 3-pt, in the tires, or on the wheels.
